  1. Remember scanning?

The progress has been exponential the last decade , so it does seem absurd to talk about jaz and zip drives. And pagemaker. (was better than indesign) haha Working in the late stages of photo to digital imaging was pretty cool for me to see as a newbie. We had a cruise camera this place I...
  2. Remember scanning?

One day as a printer tech on a 36" b & w engineering copier...I lost a spring in the machine. The whole machine would not function, so I had to order one. A day or two later I go and install the spare (I bought 6 or 7) Put her back together. When I picked up the paper roll/spindle to load the...
  3. Remember scanning?

Helping out my customer with exactly where their text will fall on this wavy shape. I get to do fun work.
  4. Remember scanning?

I like this comment a lot. Accurate I guess.
  5. Remember scanning?

...and honestly. I've had to print bs that is way worse than some of my slide scans...you know that I cared about...at 20 feet wide. It's heartbreaking.
  6. Remember scanning?

Reprographics was my college, and I have got a good handle on the graphics and cadd side of things. I've been a machine tech...talking to the president of Contex scanners in Devon Energy fixing their $60,000 scanners. I worked on Oce's and HP's. I have built a color management system for grand...
  7. Remember scanning?

Sweet! I made every blueprint for the Tacoma Dome parking garage! 180 originals times 100! It was 1 in 1 out before digital. There's nothing like walking through a light trap door to the photo room!
  8. Remember scanning?

My first job in the print industry was to collate blank 5 bank tabs. Cases and cases of them! I did it for awhile but moved into the diazo department. Blueprinting was better!
  9. Remember scanning?

Scanning film was the best you could get back in the day. Digital cameras were garbage. We looked at it as a pretty big responsibility...it might be the last time that "thing" was intact. It also taught us to MANAGE our assets, something I see too few people take the care to do anymore. All of...
  10. Remember scanning?

Just wondering how many people on this site had to scan boxes and boxes of 35mm slides? It was painful but gave me some serious Photoshop skills! It's why I get my hackles up when I see awful images used in layouts that came straight from a digital camera! The quality is so much better now...
  11. create an ICC profile via your design program

Gotcha! I've seen your posts and Vander J's. You guys are cut from the same printer cloth as me. If you want to be a real dumb masochist (like me)...get into grand format dye sublimation! It hurts so good. Honestly, all I did was follow the media wizard for profiling. I already knew a good...
  12. Any tips on taking pictures so that everything sizes up the same?

You are fighting perspective. There are more factors than "zooming in" with a telephoto lens from far away. Did you know the ancient romans built many of their structures and monuments out of square and plumb so they "looked" straight? Sorry, but an app won't make it go away.
  13. create an ICC profile via your design program

I say let the rip do it's job. If I had it my way, I would never deal with another cmyk file. That is EXACTLY what your rip is for. As for managing your color on the front end...what exactly is that benefit? Unless you have multiple versions of rip software, it should always be the destination...
  14. Question Illustrator PMS color has differing CMYK percentages depending on File

If you convert it from a true lab spot color...it relies on your working space for color. You'll see this a lot when black only builds are converted to rgb or cmyk...you will get percentages with decimal points. Printing arbitrary rich grays like this can give color shift. We try and keep...
  15. pdf export

Check for overprint in your Illustrator native file. It will show up fine on screen...disappears at rip.
  16. Rant Help Make Our Lives Better: Reform Illustrator's Canvas Size Limit

I work with compound shapes sometimes, like funnels and domes. We have to explicitly map the geometry to 2d so a customer even can design for it. The funnel template I've attached demonstrates why the art we receive can only be as good as the templates we provide. Figuring out gores for a sphere...
  17. Rant Help Make Our Lives Better: Reform Illustrator's Canvas Size Limit

I have to do a bunch of templating for dimensional signage. Thinks like 8 ft tall typefaces with a couple feet of depth. The analytical tools and unwrapping of curves surfaces are essential to marry up print with a physical surface. Sometimes I have to know the surface area of the round part of...
  18. Rant Help Make Our Lives Better: Reform Illustrator's Canvas Size Limit

Just like in illustrator, you have to know how to create clean vectors in cad. Things like closing objects, booleans, and keeping curves native as curves. If you are a hack in cad, you are probably not going to get clean vectors in illustrator. I work in outline view in illustrator for most...
  19. Rant Help Make Our Lives Better: Reform Illustrator's Canvas Size Limit

I like the way rhino handles offsets. There are some curve blending tools and being able to input values for moving/scaling/rotating right at the cursor make thinks fast. All of the constraints are very useful, nice to use for keeping opposing curves tangential, things Illy can’t do. Type is...
  20. Rant Help Make Our Lives Better: Reform Illustrator's Canvas Size Limit

I actually really liked Freehand. Was never a huge fan of Corel, however I liked it's bare bones feel. Any vector software is great if you are creating and producing it all. We can't get away from Adobe due it's popularity among designers. Every time I see "non-native" effects in Illy my head...
