  1. Discussion Perks to Owning Your Own Shop

What would you say are the top three benefits to owning your own shop? How long have you owned your own shop? If someone came along and asked you about opening their own shop, would you advise them to do so or not? Just curious to know some other shop owners' views...
  2. Need Help Is my workplace safe ?

If you are concerned, you can file an anonymous report with OSHA and they will come out. The other thing you can do is get a Maxflo Air air scrubber (different people call them different things). Basically what it is is a fan that has filters on 4 sides, along with charcoal filters. The...
  3. National Companies Subbing out Installs... Your rules?

This is better than Jerry Springer! My fave was about 10 years ago when someone wanted net30, after which they wanted to put it on their credit card....soooo, wait 30 days for the money AND pay the processing fee to the cc company??!!! Ok.
  4. Starting my own Business, Would like help naming.

If I took my own advice my shop would be named "Stack of Pallets Signs" or "Old Asphalt Signs" or maybe "Dry Underbrush Signs." Or how about "Air Makeup Unit Signs"
  5. Starting my own Business, Would like help naming.

Do what the Amish do around here...look out your window and name it that: "woodside signs" "maple lane signs" "dry creek signs" or use you and your wife's initials "b and l signs or whatever... I always get a kick out of their business names... Anyway how about Stone River Signs or Reluctant...
  6. Discussion So, how many are gonna...............................

They have the right to do this. I also have the right to say they're stupid for doing it. My opinion...if it ever gets to the point where one side or the other side maintain that you have no right to say your side, then we have a problem.
  7. Discussion Average pay

I think it partly depends on what skills you have. It also kind of depends on what other kinds of jobs are available in your area. If it's more profitable to switch fields in order to make more money hourly, people will do it, at least around here. The RV industry is HUGE around here. And...
  8. What is a more proper description?

My favorite is when the CNC guys look down on me when I use inches as my native dimension and they are using mm. As long as there is money in the bank at the end of the day what does it matter even if I am using cubits or fathoms?;)
  9. Papyrus

Oh man dude that was awesome.
  10. Intellectual property infringement or public domain?

It's a coolness factor for a tourist. One of my first thoughts was, at my age, how much would I like to be working off the ground like that? Then secondly, how many shirts per hour can be made? What about weather? Sustainability of such an operation?
  11. Fonts suddenly not showing up on CoreldrawX7

:Coffee:Yes, still using XP on many of my CNC's, with no problems whatsoever. Not hooked up to the internet, never will be. I love not updating my stuff.
  12. EMS 606PC3 problems

Sounds like a loose connection. LOCK OUT THE POWER FIRST then get in there and check everything out. Is this a 480 volt 3 phase machine? Make sure you LOCK OUT the power so someone can't come along and reenergize the machine while you're working in there and you get killed.
  13. Subscription Based Software

I agree with pretty much everything you're saying. It kind of reminds me of buying a new car. They say, "what do you want your payments to be?" I just really hate the prospect of always owing something to someone. Now it is true that that payment includes interest, which in my mind makes...
  14. Subscription Based Software

I already have Corel, mostly use Draw, that is coming from our foray into the world of laser. It came with our Epilog. I use it pretty much every day. I've had it for about 7 years, only upgraded once. We're mostly CNC so laying up in black and white is sufficient, then export the vectors to...
  15. Subscription Based Software

It just galls me that after using CC for long enough, I will be so much money in and once I stop with the subscription costs, it will go away. All that money in and I own nothing. I only use what I believe to be is a small percentage if its functionality. For others, maybe you use all of AI...
  16. Subscription Based Software

Yes, I hear what all of you are saying, great conversation. I think of it this way: say I make a sign for you. You ask me "how much?" I say "$10 per month for as long as you own it. As soon as you're done looking at it, take it down, and stop paying for it, you have to give it back to me."...
  17. Subscription Based Software

Yes, in a sense, I agree. I have a passion and desire to run my business without mindlessly handing over money to everyone that has a subscription for something. I am cheap, that's for sure, but I think that's part of being a good business owner: can you achieve the same level of quality and...
  18. Subscription Based Software

Adobe is making me really mad with the subscription based software. You sync fonts from Typekit, they sign you out overnight, fonts are gone, go to sign in, but since they make you change your passwords over and over, you can't remember, then you gotta sign up for a password change...all that...
  19. Terminating Employees is Tough

Did you have to fire for financial reasons? Or they just were not a good fit? Misconduct? If misconduct you need to have a policy in place that they were made aware of at the beginning and document all your warnings. I know it's a huge hassle, but you basically have to document everything to...
