  1. Dealing with hostile competition

Hey Dynam1¢, I've got a question for you: What happens when you want to grow as a business and your overhead increases, hire employees etc? You will probably need to raise your prices to pay for that right? Did they teach you in your marketing class what happens when your prices jump from...
  2. Dealing with hostile competition

So is that the norm now? To ask customers to see what other sign shops quote? I mean how do you ever see this information? Do they volunteer it? Like going to Walmart with a coupon from dollar general so they will price match? (even in that scenario I'm pretty sure Walmart just matches that...
  3. Some designs for great customers...

They are all great, but I love the front porch one and the Dave Mark Design.
  4. logo for Food Truck

I agree with what others have posted. Based on what you've said, this doesn't sound like the ideal set of circumstances. But if things were different, and I believed that you had a good chance of getting through to them, I would try to convince them that simply picking out a font does not make...
  5. Making Shapes in the form of an Oval

The blend tool, then use the "path properties" tool is the best way I have found to follow certain paths. If your just following a circle path, I have found the easiest way is to create your first dot, using your snap to objects command snap that dot to a quadrant on the circle path, double...

  8. Walldogs turn 20 (or 140?) design

I take my lettering, I then give it an internal contour. I then take my engraved looking texture and power clip it inside of that internal contour and make it a shade lighter than the lettering.

  12. Can we discuss politics without getting political?

Have any of you looked at the source code on Obama's site?
  13. "Crowd Source" design...

I can almost guarantee we get the same type of clients, and I can tell you this, they can afford all of those things. They have purchased much more expensive things for their business, some of which I would argue have less value to the success of their company, but I guess that's a matter of...
  14. "Crowd Source" design...

Don't you see? The only reason so many are unwilling to pay a certain price for creative services,,, the reason they don't respect or value what we do is because so many in our industry or other graphic design industries don't value their own services and don't ask for higher prices...
  15. "Crowd Source" design...

You know instead of using crowd sourcing as an excuse to practice, in which case your practice perpetuates the idea to companies and individuals that a designers time isn't that valuable, perhaps instead you could spend that time building up your own portfolio with projects where you set the...
  16. "Crowd Source" design...

Every time a person walks into your shop and expects you to do design or any preliminary work before they even decide to hire or pay you for your services, remember that feeling. Every time they take your quote and sketches and shop them around, remember that feeling. Every time a person walks...
  17. The Olympics logo

All that really proves is that the old tale of the emperor and his new clothes is timeless and still applies today.
  18. Website script or program - Design your own sign

Why on earth would you want to do that? It hurts your business by removing a profitable service you could be offering, and it hurts theirs by allowing them to create what will most likely be a crappy sign. You take design out of the equation, what separates you from the guy down the street...
  19. Why does Corel open eps and ai files like this?

I agree. I've never seen coreldraw open an eps or ai like that, It looks like something autotraced not an error opening a vector file.
  20. The answer is "NEVER"

I agree. Not that I'm saying you shouldn't have fired him, however he probably beats you up on your price because you do end up lowering it for him, even if it is higher to begin with. He probably just assumes that's the way it's supposed to be at your shop because you have played that game in...
