  1. Aldo Novarese

Designed some amazing fonts. Any discerning artist would do well to look more at the library of his work. I am regularly stunned at the variety and quality of his work. I love one, then I love the next even better, right now Aribiter BQ is my favorite. Landi Linear (1942). This was...
  2. Apple has reported Steve Jobs has died

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Steve Jobs may not meet your standard, but I doubt, given his circumstances, you would either, and it is highly unlikely that most any would be as brilliant as he was. Macs were great when PCs crashed and sucked, sure they may have been...
  3. Apple has reported Steve Jobs has died

When he dropped out of college, he still studied there, and he became enamored with calligraphy, then type. Type was very important to Steve Jobs, and Apple, which is why they were so much better than PCs at the DTP revolution. A funny side note on the fonts, he did not always have the best...
  4. Buying a Different Plotter

Check out CiberSupply, they have an demo model Graphtec CE 5000 for 1200 bux with stand, and they are good folks too.
  5. anybody know this font?

That has to be, no, it is, the worst card I have seen in quite a while!!
  6. Roland Desktop Printer/Cutter

I like the idea of metallic, but white and metallic would have been even better! The sample I got was good print quality, but the cutout was Cheezy. I think this is a product that ought not be though, why not get a bigger Mimaki/Roland for not so much more? It is not quite a niche piece (like an...
  7. should I come back after lunch?

Seriously, they don't care. Leave. Fast. Why give them your goods when they do not return it with regular pay checks? Get out. Don't complain again if you stay, eventually it becomes your problem.
  8. should I come back after lunch?

Get a new job. Give them two weeks notice and make money. You have lasted how long, so you need to have an exit strategy. If you are married talk to your wife, if single, talk to someone who you can confide in. Really figure to leave quickly, get your resume together, have your list of...
  9. Signs 101 Membership Qualifications

To my mind, it is not the well thought out large corporation that is going to kill you, it is the smaller competitors that ding you to death.
  10. Signs 101 Membership Qualifications

So Mainframe, are these big businesses really stealing your clients? To me they make a decision as to whether or not certain undertakings are good for their bottom line. I knew this woman who ordered signs for a huge insurance company. I was excited to meet her (same church) and guess what? All...
  11. Signs 101 Membership Qualifications

This kind of bothers me. What if it was a cheap ass low balling in his garage competitor? Should he not be allowed in to signs 101? Is there no room for them to learn about how to make higher net profits by higher pricing structures? The whole corporation/anti-corporation thing is kind of...
  12. Signs 101 Membership Qualifications

Are they sign professionals? Let them in. Anyone who is against them really needs to think, how large is too large to be allowed in to signs101? How big is too big? If your biggest client is a beer distributor and you don't get more clients, is it their fault you relied on them for the source...
  13. WinPlot vs CoCut

I had CoCut 9 and it was excellent, it worked with many of the vector programs I worked with (Freehand 9, Corel 8, Illustrator 7.) The only reason I sold it was I found LXI Sign for a steal on ebay and it was cheaper than updating CoCut. I never was asked to pay for upgrades from CoCut.
  14. What's the best way

I always think it is tough to learn a type of program, but if it is good, you will learn other similar programs. I learned on Freehand, I knew no other way for years, but when I had to learn Illustrator, I had the basic concepts of what a vector program could do. Going from there to another...
  15. Font ID - Help Please

Here it is Think that is it. When I typed it with caps, it was not it, but I knew it was it. With the serifs taken off, aye aye aye.
  16. Font ID - Help Please

All lower case of URW Capella
  17. What's the best way

Do you know about vectors? Do you know design? Do you know about document set up? Personally, if you know corel, or some other vector art program, you will pickup Illustrator pretty quickly. If not write down your objectives and then you can figure out what you need to learn.
  18. Fonts not to use?

When fonts were made in Hot Metal days, kerning was far different. In my estimation, certain fonts (like Bodoni & Univers) work with slight tightening of some characters (like the numeral 1 to other numbers, Caps next to lower case vowels)
  19. Fonts not to use?

Marlene, just make the "on" looser (their is heavy opitical issues that occur when certain shapes come too close together. Also tighten the "ne" a bit.
  20. Fonts not to use?

By good typography books like Anatomy of a typeface. Understand why certain fonts work well so often (Antique Olive, Akzidenz Grotesk) and others fail so often (Arial, Antique book) Go to "On snots and fonts" Lucs website. Read about a time, not so long ago where hardware was married to...
