I did a ton of that stuff, pre digital. I would say its a time waster, but I will answer more tomorrow(wife is sick)

At the entry level they all have some trade offs, so you have to ask yourself what is important to you? I'm leaning toward the Pentax, but really for what I am going to use it for, a Canon, Sony or Nikon would do great too. I googled best entry level DSLR and just spent some time reading about them

My all time favorite is FontStudio from Letraset, but you can use fontforge for free and its nice, at a pricepoint you can live with (free).

FontForge, its free, it works and it is Mac/PC/Linux
