I would do a search on here... There are a zillion existing threads about this topic.

They performed well. The deal is that for the cost, they didn't perform well enough. The cost vs performace ratio didn't add up. Not to mention that in order to get a decent sized scratch disk, you would have to put eight (or so) SSDs in a system. Now that isn't cheap.

LOL, did you see how many SSD's he had in there? That is probably $40,000 worth of hard drives, easy. We have tested the SSD's in our systems. The cost of the drives is still way too high for the capacities we need. Not only that, we a experienced too many failures in the drives themselves...

  6. Building New Computer

I am sorry. I left out a very important part of the sentence. Video editing, gaming, or 3D rendering workstations are not designed for graphic design. They are probably great at what they are meant to do, but they don't perform nearly as well as a true graphic design workstation AT GRAPHIC...
  7. Building New Computer

You are right, tech evolves very fast. But if you are waiting on your computer, then a faster computer can save you time and $$$. Often it pays for itself in time saved way before it becomes obsolete. If it is expensive, but saves you enough time and $$$ to pay for itself, then it really...

Performance Without giving away too much info, here are some recent results in comparing Photoshop times between a few of our systems and a customers systems. Mind you, the customer's computer was a Core2Quad Q6600 system with 4GB or RAM. Please note that all results are in seconds. The left...
  10. Building New Computer

There is a fundamental difference in Illustrator and Photoshop. One is vector and the other is raster. Vector (Illustrator) is usually going to give you smaller file sizes and take less resources to deal with, but raster (Photoshop) is going to give a much larger set of tools in your toolbox...
  11. Building New Computer

Jim, We do our own benchmarking and testing in Photoshop. I have a wealth of numbers that tell me there is a HUGE difference in basic Photoshop commands between 4GB and 8GB. The difference between 4GB and 16GB is even more unbelievable. Certain Photoshop tasks are hard on the processors...
  12. Building New Computer

I like the idea of waiting a little bit on Windows 7. I really like the Release Candidate they have out. It is really slick. But that being said, I would be a little hesitant to recommend it to a customer right after the initial release. I, for one, will be an early adopter for sure. That...

You have decent hardware in that system. As you already know (from talking to you on the phone), I might suggest moving from that Maxtor to a faster 10,000RPM drive or drives (RAID). But with the hardware that you have listed, it shouldn't take 2 minutes to open a 8MB file in Flexi. I...

  16. Best way to clone a Hard Drive

Have you thought about just adding it in as a second drive? Then store your files on it instead of the C:/ drive? Anyhoo... I have used some good ones in the past, but "Ghost" was a very simple drive image (or clone) software.
  17. Vista 64-bit....

As far as I know, Graphtec device drivers are OK in Vista 64. It is the USB drivers that have a problem. If you run it through Ethernet instead of USB, I think that is workable. Please double check with Graphtec about your specific device before doing anything.
  18. Vista 64-bit....

What software are you worried about? We use Vista 64 exclusively (aside from testing Windows 7 RC1). As long as your software is fairly recent, you probably won't have any issues. That being said, there are exceptions.
  19. Vista 64-bit....

    Sweet!
  20. Computer Harware(processor) Question

This chart can be a bit misleading. The problem I see is that all of the processors are tested in combination with different hardware. We do all of our own benchmarking in Photoshop, but we test on equal hardware. That way, we get a good comparison. You would be amazed how many...
