  1. Thinking it might be time to hire my first employee, how to in this day and age?

Yes, I'd have to agree with this one too. We have tried some "graphic design" college students from time to time. Only know illustrator as that's the only thing taaught in college. They expect too high of a pay to start out. The instructor actually tells them do not take a job for less than $15...
  2. Corel X8 is out!!!!!!!!!!!

yes, X7 macros will work with X8
  3. Corel X8 is out!!!!!!!!!!!

How can I make more money? Speed up production. How can I do that? Hmm..reduce the time it takes to design signs! How can I do that? Uhhh...use CorelDraw!
  4. Thinking it might be time to hire my first employee, how to in this day and age?

consider a high schooler. We did this for a couple of years. Come in after school around 3ish. Sweep, weed, stick, empty trash, answer phones. Probably could get away with minimum wage too.
  5. Thinking it might be time to hire my first employee, how to in this day and age?

rates are going to vary greatly. Depends on the area and how experienced the person is. Designer? Weeding and sticking? Sales/customer service? I'd say rural area $10 p/hr to start. Knowledgeable designer start at $12 p/hr. Urban areas would have to be higher.
  6. Thinking it might be time to hire my first employee, how to in this day and age?

Careful now. I'm a retiree. lol Retired military that is. Signs is now my career. We've gone through several part timers over the years I've been here. Very frustrating indeed. Must know computers and software well. The rest you can teach a caveman to do. Oops, sorry about that one.
  7. Summa contour cutting software or Illustrator Plugin

Sounds like the setup we use but with CoreDRAW. We use a RIP for printing and a cut plugin for Corel. I went one further and made my own macro to allow making the registration marks from the designers pc's. I did this because the printer has it's own designated pc for our print person to run. I...
  8. Free Stuff For Y'all

I've done much of the same sign templates and assigned a macro to the most common. Aluminum sign blanks from most third party companies use a corner radius of 1.5" with 3/8" holes centered 3" from top and bottom. We don't use vehicle templates for wraps. Way too many variations within models...
  9. Help with seams on a cargo van

Agreed. Just don't overuse seams to shortcut an install. We do all our wraps with minimal seams. I've seen some real hack jobs out there.
  10. Help with seams on a cargo van

First and foremost don't seam unless absolutely necessary. We print in as many sections as possible i.e. doors etc. Vertical seams only unless no choice. Also don't forget that a section printed horizontally will be out from a print that was rotated 90deg.
  11. Welding in Corel?

change to wireframe view and show us a snapshot with the windows snipping tool
  12. Hp latex 360 printer

That's what we had before. Never profiled anything, loaded all kinds of material and used the same profile on everything. No problems at all with banding, no problems getting good reds or blues. I still haven't been able to achieve good reds or blues with the HP. loading the HP...they actually...
  13. Hp latex 360 printer

Uh.. hello a 5 year old can't lift a 40lb roll of 54" banner stock lol I just feel the 360 is cumbersome to switch out medias. and believe me we own a 360 so calm down! Perhaps our HP rep failed to show the "easy way to load/unload" and/or use the takeup which we now have rigged to get by. I...
  14. Hp latex 360 printer

You call inserting a rod through the roll an easy load?! You have to pull the roll out of the "socket", undo a lever to unlock a ring thingy from one rod end and set aside some where, pull the rod out and set it aside on a table, put your roll media away, grab the next roll and reverse all that...
  15. Hp latex 360 printer

Are you kidding me!!! All I've ever seen in here is negative posts about the HP360! - Color will NEVER be right unless you go 12-16 pass. - Jams all the time with many different types of media! - pita to load! - Puts out a lot of heat - Has to have a 220V HATE IT!
  16. Design - Do you provide working files?

95% of our layouts are designed by us from sketches on a napkin or by phone conversation. Graphic design companies tend to have no idea of the print world but a sign shop knows both print and design. Just saying. :Big Laugh
  17. boat wrap happening Monday

Yeah, the design wasn't my idea. I was just asked to put it together. Personally I don't buy a car for the graphics package. I'm not a boat guy but if I were I've seen much better graphics that I'd actually like to keep. This one would be stripped off before it got in the water lol
  18. boat wrap happening Monday

Boat for sale with wrap. A little something I threw together for a boat sales company to help sell a 36' boat. Gonna be pia to install though. 2 prints 52" x 460" and a piece to cover the seam on the front or bow

  20. Design - Do you provide working files?

This is what leads to clients not having their logos in a vector format. If you have a design in photoshop you are limiting yourself to the use of it. We get this stuff all the time. People read all the hype about photoshop and go out and buy it to become a graphic designer. I'm just saying you...
