  2. Making The Next Step

FWIW - I run a Mac G5 with a Roland CX-300 using SignCut software. It's a subscription based software, but it works flawlessly with my cutter.
  3. Where to start?

If you have a "true" graphic design background and proven experience working in a print shop, ad-agency etc., then you have a leg up on many of those starting out. Anyone can be taught to weed/mask and apply vinyl - though it does take a lot of practice to become proficient. However, good...
  4. Hello from Ohio

    Howdy from Columbus.
  5. Drum Scanner.. any one uses it?

I used to use a drum scanner years ago for prepress work. However, we got rid of it due to major improvements and lower cost for flatbed scanners. I can't see why it would be necessary for sign making unless you're doing fine art reproduction or something critical like that.
  6. MAC or Windows ?

I've been using both MAC's and PC's professionally for over 13 years. I've heard about every argument for/against MAC's and PC's. They each have their own unique strengths and weaknesses. Regardless of what anyone "feels" about MAC's or PC's, they are just tools. Tools that are used to get...
  7. MAC or Windows ?

Your information is incorrect. See my post above, and this link below.:thumb: http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
  8. MAC or Windows ?

Sean, the new intel macs are very versatile. They boot in either the Mac OS or Windows or Unix/Linux. So essentially you can have 1 box to run a multitude of different apps and operating systems based on your needs. I currently run both a mac and a pc due to designers bringing in files...
  9. What spec of computer?

Right now I use 2 rigs side-by-side: 1. Mac G5 DP - 2GB ram, 500GB storage 2. Dell tower with Dual Pentium 2.8, 2GB ram, 320GB storage Both are holding their own, but as soon as funds are available I'll be upgrading to a MacPro w/4GB ram and Adobe CS3 and will run both the MacOS and WindowsOS...
  10. Color Management For Idiots

Not to come off like a wise-azz, but no. I've been in the offset printing field for over 13 years (just now making the move to wide format) and it still is quite a challenge and a mystery sometimes. You have lots of variables involved...the monitor, the scanner, the output device, the...
  11. roland cx-300 pro

The CX-300 is one model older and very similar to the current GX-300 that Roland sells now for around $3,000 USD. I believe the only major difference in the machine is the optical registration system. The CX-300 is a pro level machine and is a very reliable one - I own one and it's been great...
  12. Buh-bye Freehand.....

I started off using Freehand for design, then switched to Illustrator around version 8. Not going to miss it - though many are I assume.
  13. Valuejet 1204 or 1604?

    Matt, sent you an email.
  14. Valuejet 1204 or 1604?

Well, the only thing that struck me as odd was a "holier-than-thou" attitude prjected by the sales rep. The sales rep. grilled me on my "graphic knowledge" and actually told me; "Well, we don't sell this equipment to just anybody." *It's like I had to convince him that 13 years of prepress...
  15. Valuejet 1204 or 1604?

Don't know if any of you are near the midwes, but currently the only vendors I see that service Ohio are Piedmont Plastics and Fuji. We have contacted both and are getting proposals. Anyone have other recommendations? Also, we'll be looking at a laminator would love to hear suggestions on...
  16. Valuejet 1204 or 1604?

Our business is looking at purchasing a large format printer for banners and vehicle graphics. From all the glowing reports here we are going to take a hard look at the Mutoh Valuejet line. (We are also going to look at Roland machines.) However, our main concern with the Mutoh is size. We...
  17. Signcut x2 problems

Also, make sure you've adjusted your cutter to their recommended settings. Once I did that my CX-300 worked like a charm.
  18. Anyone else using SignCut?

dclet, no I didn't buy the dongle version - though I might. I purchased a 1-year license for $49. Figured I'd make sure I like it before I buy it outright. Like I said, very pleased and seems to work with most common plotters.
  19. Using Drill Press For A Paper Drill???

Is there a local print shop nearby? Why not have them do it? Or, how about this one? http://cgi.ebay.com/Paper-Drill-Challenge-Floor-Model-Single-Head_W0QQitemZ290104943291QQihZ019QQcategoryZ57051QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  20. Anyone else using SignCut?

Just wanted to see who else out there is using SignCut. I know many are using more expensive packages like Flexi etc., but I purchased SignCut because I wanted to design in Illustrator from a Mac. (And not break the bank doing it.) Overall, I've been very pleased with the software. While...
