  1. Employee Retention and new applicants

Or, he's a boss that actually cares. We have 15-20 people working here - Most of them have been working here for 15+ years. I'm the newest at 3.5 years. Theres a few at 25+ years. If the business shut down, thats 15-20 people he's known for 10-25 years that will be out jobs - Most of them too...
  2. Employee Retention and new applicants

Lets say you have 5 employees. a 25 cent raise per year is 8*5*.25 = $10 more per day. Lets be generous and say you have 20 employees... Thats $40 more per day. Or the profit off of 1 sign... I doubt you have 20 employees as a sign shop. So if you cant afford a .25 cent raise each year...
  3. Cheap material

I had a friend of a friend want cheap decals. 4" x4"... Charged her 50 cents each, cause she only.ordered 100. Her artwork was bad... But she approved a photo over a cell because she needed them quick. Sure enough after they're all printed... She doesn't like them. I redo her artwork and...
  4. Onyx 12 Question

Sadly I have a graphtec. Kind of wish I got a Summa though... Once our work graphtec is on its last legs, I'm going to push for the Summa. How do you find it handles reflective media? Ours is good 70-80% of the time... then theres the one panel thats always a quarter inch off for some reason!
  5. Suggestions Suitable Media for HP L25500

Any media marketed for solvent should work in a latex. I've used $100 rolls, while.it does curl, it still works perfectly. I'm not 100% sure on the l2550 older latex printers... But the newer latex printers at least, you don't need to keep the ink flowing .You can unplug it, plug it back in 6...
  6. Onyx 12 Question

Does onyx do roll to roll with the barcode? As in keep on scanning the next, and continue cutting? Or do you have to load each job still?
  7. Needing opinions on the best way to accomplich this

You could get fancy and do a butt joint with some knifeless if you can actually feel or see the ridge.. Crappy video, but something like this - Hard part would be making your half circle perfect if you've never used knifeless before. Other than those ideas... good luck! It's always fun to...
  8. Needing opinions on the best way to accomplich this

Ah. Not much you can do about that then. All 6 are different too? You could throw a 12 x 12 square on each... take a couple shots of each straight on... Trace it in illustrator, and adjust each file. But thats a lot of work, you'll be making / printing 6 separate files... so unless the money...
  9. Needing opinions on the best way to accomplich this

the 8600 should be able to do it perfectly. its never more than a MM or two off for us. How do you print/cut? Through illustrator, or your rip? I find illustrator is more accurate than onyx for some reason.. Onyx is good for really, really long stuff when you put out a ton of marks for it to...
  10. Needing opinions on the best way to accomplich this

What cutter are you using? Our graphtec has no problems cutting it nearly perfectly. There's the occasional piece that messes up like you said.. but 99/100 pieces cut ok. I'd try to do it via the cutter, may not be as bad as you think!
  11. Employee Retention and new applicants

I don't like having people clean up after me. Every job I've worked at there was always one guy who'd never do his share, and of course he was the one who made a mess. I feel like if I made the mess, even if it's just normal stuff... I should be the one to clean it up. For the most part I keep...
  12. Employee Retention and new applicants

Hey now, our money's not that bad! Starting here for sign industry is 15. I started at 17 because of having level 2 fa... Jumped up a couple bucks since. The shop I'm at isn't the highest paying.. I was offered a job by a former employee for $24 an hour, turned it down since I'm happy where I...
  13. Employee Retention and new applicants

My workplace is a mess. I get complaints from the owners passed onto my boss a couple times a year. I tell them I run the flatbed, roll to roll, while also running cutter/weeding/laminating all day... I barelly have a minute to sit. Whenever I do have a break... I clean and this place is...
  14. Employee Retention and new applicants

I'd rather fire someone than not give them a cost of living raise. They'd have to be REALLY bad in my eyes, to not earn a 3-4% raise. Even if they're making $15... that's only about a 50-60 cent raise per year. IMO, if they're not good enough to keep their wages current.. let them go. You...
  15. The perfect hem

I'm in the middle of doing 30 4x8 banners, so I feel you. I use onyx, the banner is setup to size... I then bleed it out 1" in onyx, Then apply "Sew lines" at 0", and 1" all around. Set it up as a quick set.... then any size banner is automatically setup. I trim to the outer sew line... Put...
  16. Employee Retention and new applicants

I was a lead hand in a warehouse about 10 years ago. There was a guy under me I hated... he'd spend literally an hour in the bathroom everyday, he was slow at his job... refused to do anything but the bare minimum. My first year as a lead hand, I was called into HR and asked about what raises to...
  17. Employee Retention and new applicants

Ask Elon musk about that with his Automated Teslas. He cant meet demand because his robots are doing an inferior job... He says he now regrets trying to automate everything. I'm sure he'll still automate and try to perfect it in the future... But a robot can't tell when a sign is printing bad...
  18. Employee Retention and new applicants

You should give raises every year. Inflation is a couple percent every year... So if you don't give a raise, every year your employee is making less. Every company I've worked at gave 4-5% every year... Its not much, maybe 25-50 cents an hour .Then every few years... The good people usually...
  19. How does a signmaker take a vacation?

This is one of the reasons I haven't went full blown on my own business. I'm the only printer operator for my company - last vacation they got lucky since I had people visiting me.. so I worked 2 days a week and took 3 weeks off. Got most of my work done doing a 12 hour shift. This vacation...
  20. Not sure what to use ? Please help

We print on 8518 in reverse and then white back it all the time. Its not the best media to print on... You can buy ij40 in clear,.and 180 I'm clear. If your just needing to do it to one sign... Print on an overlam mirror imaged, apply it to the back... Then apply a true white vinyl to the back...
