  1. arched font in this sign

I don't mind bold sans too much, the proportions are off here, the name should read first, then construction. Construction is overwhelming the layout a bit. I would put the phone number on a straight path, I think it competes with the name as well.
  2. arched font in this sign

3 fonts is fine, but I agree with Shovelhead, Contruction might not go to well with you name typestyle. I would play with the type a little more. Maybe the name in Black/bold type maybe try all caps, the a script/brush typestyle for construction.
  3. how do you do create this outline?

I usually don't use "ouline path" when designing....it's to restrictive when getting the right ouline I want. What I do is give it a outline till I acheive the right look, one it's done I select it then "expand" it, there is usallly some "uniting" that must be done, but this way I have more...
  4. New sign co. owner

I have to agree with Bob, There are a lot of skill sets you need to have to really be succesfull, I have to say, if you can design, but not be able to swing a hammer, you are in big trouble. If, through your reading you find you lack insome certain skill set, find someone who has it, and team...
  5. New sign co. owner

Ah that helps Paul-to me, to be markketable, you have to get your design skills up, knowing the software is only 10% of the battle-being a decent designer is the trick. Practice your eye while practicing your software. What I did was find logos or layouts I liked and copied them, that way I...
  6. New sign co. owner

You can contact Signs of the Times for Back Issues, I think Signcraft is a better magazine for a smaller sign shop. What you don't say is if you have any backround or real expereince in signage or graphic design, what your goals?, are you starting out with vinyl and digital output? design? and...
  7. cutting aluminum

Most of my projects are high end, so I usually call out solid stock or fabricated aluminum or stainless, but with small letters I would do them in solid stock, less headaches. I like those laminates like Chemetal, but only use them on flat panels-not letters.
  8. HELP!!

It is close to this font, but not quite-this one is called "Willow" it has a roughness to it though, if you want, II can type it out for you, but you would have to clean it up.
  9. Software Preference

I'm assuming your on a PC-if you are on a Mac-The Illustrator is the way to go, since Corel is dumping thier Mac version- To me they are tools, one is no better than the other, if money is tight, I would go Corel, solid program, lots of support in the sign community. I use Illustrator with...
  10. Help please, starting from scratch.

That helps, A lot of people get into this business looking at the auto/truck graphics as a step into it, Banners is a natural since they are simple, not a bad start, but there is a lot of competition, especially in your location, be prepared for it. One way is subscribing to magazines like...
  11. Help please, starting from scratch.

Before I can answer your question, can I ask a few? Have you had experience with this business? How is your graphic design experience? (not software experience but designing) Any expereince with color correction, Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel or any other graphics programs (the tools of...
  12. Images don't show up

If I remember correcty, I could never diirectly open an .ai or .eps from GA, one quick fiix might be investing in CorelDraw even an older version (I have seen V.9 for 99 bucks), will allow you to transfer it into a .tiff. ootherwise you have to do a screen shot. :( I know you have heard this...
  13. Amusing Signs - says it all, really.

They are signs alright, sometimes I go through 5-10 copy changes with copywriters to architects to ride consultants getting involved, it's signage!!!
  14. Amusing Signs - says it all, really.

Your gonna hate me Jim, I do a lot of theme and amusment park signage, I get to take weeks to months to design them and have someone else make them-our company is currently working on a theme park in Hong Kong-that uses 2 languages, translations are tedious since you either have to switch your...
