  3. How Do You Find Out What Your Area Competitors Are Charging?

Gino, haven't you berated people for having a "garage" shop mentality when it comes to pricing? "I have no overhead so I can charge less."? I don't spend time checking prices, but with your scenario, I'd love to make an extra $1k on a project once in a while. And why wouldn't the customer be...
  4. How Do You Find Out What Your Area Competitors Are Charging?

Maybe I'm leaving money on the table, or maybe I should just stop bidding certain products because the market doesn't support what I need to get. Maybe I'm just curious to see what other places get. The idea that the local market should have no affect on your price is ridiculous. We don't live...
  5. How Do You Find Out What Your Area Competitors Are Charging?

I care what others charge, I want to know the market. Some jobs are public multiple bids, so I get to see where everyone was. If customers are obviously shopping i will ask them if i don't get the bid. I haven't done it in a long time, but secret shoppers is an effective method too.

Grommets and get ceiling clips made for drop ceiling grids, assuming that's what they have
  7. Question How many of you are running into commercial contractor license requirements to pull permits?

The requirements vary from town to town. Most require proof of comp & liability insurance. Some require engineered drawings for anything. There is no "Sign Contractors" license in this state. But a few years ago some of the big players in the market snuck in a new license for Electric Sign...

For my project I haven't found any in 48" or larger
  9. RE-PAINTING an old sign help & tips please

I will forgo the bah blah blah about the quality of that sign and what should be done. Like Studio 440 said, treat it like any other outdoor wood repaint job. The garden sprayer is a good idea for washing and rinsing. I'd throw some wood restorer/hardener on the rotted spots. Finding a good red...
  10. Does an actual vinyl exist with magnetic capabilities?

Nick, is that dry erase also? and adhesive backed?
  11. Hypothetical pricing question

One of my considerations on projects like that, where I buy a big ticket product wholesale, is the risk I am assuming if something goes wrong. The customer will hold me responsible for any problems, and dealing with a remote supplier that may or may not respond quickly can cause a lot of headaches.
  12. Oversized Scallop Shells

Hard time finding a chunk of granite in New England? Just dig a couple post holes :roflmao:
  13. Oversized Scallop Shells

Good suggestion, definitely made for a more interesting sign. Little tight to the trim.
  14. Boat Vinyl Install

    By glass he meant fiberglass
  15. Carved, gold leaf, smalt

23k loose leaf gold. Never seal gold leaf except on vehicles and glass. I also leaf a little sooner that I used to. I found that waiting till it's really dry will give a brilliant gild, but that also makes it harder to read, and risks losing the window of tack and having holidays.
  16. Hand Carved & Gold Leafed

Really classy job. I haven't done one by hand in years.
  17. Does an actual vinyl exist with magnetic capabilities?

Actually there are rolls of material that is both magnetic and dry erase. It has to be installed with contact cement though.
  18. Carved, gold leaf, smalt

The original posts were aluminum, and we just repainted them. The PVC caps were dinged up so we replaced them. If I made it today I'd use the aluminum again.
  19. Snap frames on vehicles?

We used Signcomp wall frame. Pop riveted three sides on and the fourth side screwed in.
  20. What is the best paint to use for vinyl lettering?

Acrylic polyurethane or any good quality oil base enamel. But in this world it's good to find a quality waterborne paint since we soon won't be able to get anything else. Oh and "cheap paints" isn't a good brand.
