  1. written quotes

Depends on the details involved. And can always be clarified when the order is actually placed. I had a vendor follow up on a (large) quote I had requested, and they offered a discount to help sell the job, on the phone. So just to be sure I had it right I emailed them a note saying I was going...
  2. Jesse Hill - J Hill Designs- needs your thoughts and prayers

What a tragedy, he will be missed here, but I can't imagine what his family is going through.
  3. How do you deal with clients that want their files

The more I think about the more I think he should offer to sell them the files. I don't see any scenario where they would come back to him. He should put a number on it high enough to make it worth it for him
  4. How do you deal with clients that want their files

It's always a judgement call, if he thinks they may still give him work he can offer to make copies of the files for $$. Then again he may be sealing his fate as a former vendor.
  5. Functional Aging...anybody up on it?

Oh, and I should have added for Gino's benefit that he enjoyed a couple fingers of Irish Whiskey every evening
  6. Functional Aging...anybody up on it?

My dad got Emphyzema when I was in grammar school. He quit smoking and started running. Even ran some marathons, ran into his 70s when he had to slow down, so he walked. The disease caught up with him in his 80s and he eventually was on full time oxygen when he hit 90. He was very pro active...
  7. Cool name sign

    Nice
  8. Trying to age a newly painted sign

If you're not worried about wrecking the finish on the door go for it. I'm surprised the laquer thinner didn't do more.
  9. Trying to age a newly painted sign

Yea, it's really better to work the aging in as you go.
  10. Advice on sandblasted mdo sign

I hope you meant HDU. Since sandblasted signs are usually at least 2.5" thick you can use brackets into the edge, studs on the back or a cleat
  11. Second Sign, First 3D Carved

I would flip the hops so the points are up and in. On second thought no, looks like an artichoke that way.
  12. Digging Equipment.............................

I've tried renting gas powered augers, never been real happy with the results. We have too much ledge and rocks around here. I have subbed out a job or two to a company that has a truck mounted auger.
  13. Level or Parallel for parking garage signage?

Sometimes level doesn't look level, as an old sign painter you should know that mechanical solutions don't always apply to visual problems.
  14. Level or Parallel for parking garage signage?

the eye doesn't lie, well actually it does. It's a judgement call that has to be made with the client's approval.
  15. Huge Project, Need Advice

From your description (but without actually seeing the design) I would suggest painting the design directly on the wall. A good wall dog can do what you are describing, of course the halftones would be rendered as fades, no dots.
  16. First Dimensional Sign

I agree with the critiques regarding fonts, arcs, kerning and spacing. The finials are kinda dinky, Outwater Plastics has some nice big ones that I use on 6"x6" posts. But you did a fine job on your first carved/gilded project. If I could find my first I would be embarrassed to post it. Of...
  17. Bus Wrap Design

I like Pat's idea, maybe a vintage photo of a brewery
  18. Bus Wrap Design

    looks like pee...
  19. Bus Wrap Design

I guess you don't want to make any major changes so I would take the advice about kerning, highlight the skyline a little more (i missed it too) and find a different texture for the background, it really doesn't look "beery". What about a hops & barley design?
  20. Jesse Hill - J Hill Designs- needs your thoughts and prayers

It's amazing how you get to know someone through this place without ever having met, and Jesse has always struck me as one of the good ones. Prayers from here for his recovery.
