What if you put the eye to the rear, might not look like a V then. On the eye I used a slightly lighter black as well. Here's a rough design of what I mean.

I use a Brother cn3040 colour lazer printer like this....they are now about a third of the price of when they came out...

I wouldn't layer as you will have the color of the back layer come thru changing the colour of the front layer when the sign is turned on. I also agree with Translucent vinyl and I always apply on the inside if on clear and flood coat last with translucent white. Looks heaps better than slapping...
