  1. A little diddy for the day...

And what's with the sword anyway? Kind of odd.
  2. A little diddy for the day...

If you used a light saber you'd get sued, Lucas is really aggressive about protecting his intellectual property. For example, Motorola licenses the Droid name from him, they don't just use it and cross their fingers.
  3. Attention HP l25500 owners!

Cheers, he just emailed you. We have a couple of good poster paper clients and hoping to push all that work to the L25500.
  4. RAID Replacements

RAID 5 for our fileserver, workstations aren't RAID but they get imaged frequently and all data lives on the fileserver (which is also cloud backed up). That's kind of the bare minimum imo.
  5. Server

Virtualized servers are virtual servers, you can put whatever you want on them. It's just like having a hardware server...without the hardware. The advantages are you're in control of your entire server environment without having to worry about hardware and you can scale on demand. Fred I hope...
  6. Attention HP l25500 owners!

Can we get samples? Unhappy with how the paper we've been using on our JV3 acts on our L25500. If so I'll have our store manager contact you.
  7. Purchasing equipment, what I hate . . .

You can approach that two ways. 1) Tell them you don't want to discuss it, hang up 2) Explain to them the reasoning, if they're good sales people they'll file away that info and know what you're looking for, so they can better target what they approach you with Option 2 makes more sense to me...
  8. Looking for new business- what has worked for you?

If you have an established, well run email newsletter you're effectively warm calling all your old clients every time you send one out.
  9. Looking for new business- what has worked for you?

Good advice, many sign shop owners get lost in the day to day and really need to find a way to step back, see the big picture, and pursue opportunities. For some that means bringing on a sales staff, for others it just means trusting staff and letting some things go so you can do what no one...
  10. Server

Prefer either Ubuntu or CentOS, though I prefer virtualized servers to actually co-locing a box. http://vps.net/product/cloud-servers/
  11. Union made decals??

    Hey look, a chart
  12. couple we did

Pediatric's color choices aren't great (and why are the babies so lifeless) and I've never understood cars like the painter's car which advertise what appears to be two businesses. WHICH ONE DO I CALL?!
  13. S101 Union Poll

This is an absurd concept and shows complete ignorance of what a union actually is. My guess is you guys are trying to get around union shop requirements which is just skeezy.
  14. Attention HP l25500 owners!

If you're a high production shop that $200 would be made back in time reduction in a day or two.
  15. Software / Equipment Purchase - What seals the deal?

For software it's other: I upgrade as fast as possible. If it's software I haven't used before it's reviews from people I trust and hands on demos. For equipment it's a mix of all of the options plus hands on demos, reviews from people I trust, industry adoption rate, cost of supplies, market...
  16. Vectorizing an image

After you get this figured out you should probably take a class in Illustrator or watch every single Illustrator video at Adobe.tv, possibly also Lynda.com. Being self-taught means you've actually taught yourself ;).
  17. Can I heat my shop with a kerosene heater?

I think I'd be looking for a new place to rent (or buy...if your area is like ours there's as much empty commercial space as there is occupied).
  18. Union made decals??

Yeah because private companies sure are good at giving all employees things like benefits. Oh wait, I don't have any and I'm in a private company. Thank FSM unions exist so we at least have regulated 8 hour weekdays with federally mandated overtime, weekends, and my kid isn't working in a...
  19. gerber composer, corel,Illustrator which one is the easiest and easy to learn

Illustrator for most everything, export to the weird specialty software when necessary to import and "clean up" or the particular needs of that print/cut software/system. I'm a designer first and a sign guy second (or like, thirteenth) and don't like wasting my time working in software I can...
  20. Need some help with pricing

(time cost + materials cost x shop markup) + design cost = price time cost = employee(s) time x employee wage(s) shop markup = your call, should cover your overhead and give you a margin you can live on, usually 1.5 (150%) or higher design cost = can of worms, another thread ;P materials cost =...
