If it's a newer Roland with VersaWorks you may have the Roland Color System. This allows you to print custom charts and then have a custom color palette for your software. Then your customer can hold up the swatch book (which you print with your printer on your media) and they tell you color...
I like iTunes. Then just use one of these cables to output from your sound card to your amp. Or if you spend $100 you can get an AirPort express and wirelessly send music from iTunes to the amp.
I use 3M-IJ35-10 for most of my signs and "decals". It's a Calendared vinyl and I would only use it for decals expected to last less than 2 years.
For high performance vinyl I use 3M-IJ180 or 3M-IJ180c. Then I laminate. Should be able to get about 5 years with that.
I have to think it's a media issue as well. When you print on the Roland Photo Paper did you change the profile in VersaWorks? Also make sure that the profile is setting the heaters. The profiles from Roland are usually a good start especially if your using there media.
Is the styletech self adhesive vinyl? I'm not familiar with it.
When I print calendared vinyl my heaters are usually:
Pre: 40ºc or 104ºf
Print: 40ºc or 104ºf
Dryer: 50ºc or 122ºf
I control my heaters via the profiles in VersaWorks. I have an XC-540 and it has a dedicated button on the front panel that says "Heater Config" I'm not sure if your SP has the same.
