  1. Need a Mac...

upgrading is a problem? it's simple- leave room for future needs... don't buy something that can't be improved upon easily... it's poor (and expensive!!!) IT planning. a dual-dual will handle everything a designer needs. buy one with 2 GB ram, but 4-6 more GB for under a hundred USD, it's a...
  2. Need a Mac...

you can get a first gen Xeon dual-dual processor mac pro on ebay for under 1k... this is your best bet. upgradable, inexpensive... I'm about to do the same thing.
  3. Server

the domain would be the machines name, if you are not on a true windows domain. are you having issues getting from the workstations to the linux box or vice-versa? in a perfect world, set up your samba users/groups and copy files from the desktops to the server, leave the server alone and shut...

  7. dsl or cable?

your prices are normal... this thread is old and these guys are talking about slow connections in the boonies. we pay 65$/mo on a 3-year for 15/5.
  8. Server

ispconfig is a pain and really isnt necessary... but if you insist. imho, if you're just doing ftp and in-house stuff, install proftpd/LAMP... or go with webmin if you insist on a GUI. also, consider CSF- www.configserver.com... very useful firewall/LFD software.
  9. Caldera RIP

Any idea of the speed/hardware specs? I know it's going to vary greatly, but curious if you had any estimations of the speed difference between flexi/caldera and onyx/caldera.

  11. Southern Meetup!

We're gettin together to plan things out, details very soon. Also, we're about to move... hopefully before the meet, new shop is twice the size of the current one.
  12. S101 Union Poll

'legitimate' use of a union bug. ...and that's pretty much it. aside from making a mockery of a life-sucking trade force that outgrew it's usefulness in the 70s.
  13. S101 Union Poll

only union i'd ever join... let's keep dues low and either hang onto em for members in need or for a worthwhile charity.
  14. So now i'm po'd

Just use 4over... easier to deal with.
  15. RAID Replacements

I use RAID for our servers (Raid 10/5, preferably 10) and implement RAID solutions for high-availability operations... but for my own workstations here at the shop, we have our samba server that contains 100% of our data including clonezilla backups. All files for our shop are loaded onto...
  16. Large custom check

We've used 2 dry-erase lams, found no difference with regards to ghosting/removal using oracal 210 or 3m 8518/8519 instead... other than a cost savings and a lack of another roll of laminate laying around.
  17. Server

Fedora isn't a server platform, no matter how old it is (unless you go back to unsupported versions, like fc1-3) I use a lot of different distros, and I consult for a webhosting company with over 500 servers- mix of CentOS (85% centos), Red Hat, Debian, SuSE and Debian... For simplicity, I'd...
  18. Server

We use a Debian 6 box in house, rsync'ed to a CentOS 5.5 box in the datacenter, both pieces of equipment i own and manage. FYI: CentOS is a free re-package of Red Hat. Stable, secure, great- I use it for a lot of servers. Red Hat's cost isn't really worth it, and Fedora is Red Hat's testing...
