  1. Half the class is bummed out...

Pretty much all design schools require internships as part of the degree requirements. All the good ones anyway. The OP's wife is teaching a HS course. Culinary schools also require intensive on the job training, etc. Most degrees of any sort now require field experience, if the university isn't...
  2. Choosing the best equipment set up?

Who said anything about a margin problem. :help You really give customers banners larger than they ordered? If I was the designer/purchaser I'd bounce that so fast. We're getting off track.
  3. Custom Highway Sign joke.

    Run!
  4. Anyone else notice.....................

I just always thought he was a fan of Sunn O))) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunn_O)))
  5. Choosing the best equipment set up?

You need 50" for a 48" banner (1" to tape under for the hem) and there's always a print margin of usually 1-1.5", 54" is perfectly perfect. Weirdo.
  6. You know your town inspectors stink....

Seriously just hardscape the whole thing. I hate grass.
  7. Major Overspray

Looks dead but make sure the capping station and the head are contacting as they should be, also try an overnight soak. Probably dead though.
  8. what do you use to vectorize?

    Pen tool in illustrator...
  9. Opinions Please

Original bottom right, and drop the text down a smidge. It's crowded by the roof just a little too much.
  10. Choosing the best equipment set up?

Why would that be wasting material? You can run 38" rolls (for a 36" banner) through a 64" machine...
  11. The $50 4x4

And yet anytime one of us here on the forums brings up differentiating yourself by competing on something OTHER than price ten idiots jump out of the woodwork saying that signs are only products and you can only compete on price blah blah. Kind of fun watching a mass extinction.
  12. Movin' 'Round....

If they're all on the same network you can just use Remote Desktop, built into windows. LogMeIn is nice though, great if they're different networks because you can use LogMeIn Hamachi to make a vlan. When I worked from home I treated it like I wasn't home -- shut the door, kept business hours...
  13. I h8 wOrD

Microsoft supplies a Save to PDF plugin that anyone can install, they just can't package it with Office as it ships due to some dumb licensing spat. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=f1fc413c-6d89-4f15-991b-63b07ba5f2e5&displaylang=en Have your customer install and...
  14. Half the class is bummed out...

Having computers doesn't make them spoiled, it makes them potentially prepared for the realities of their field. It's hardly "spoiling" when it's the norm. I suppose you think people that have indoor plumbing are spoiled too? Now clearly hand skills are still very important and any good...
  15. Our new billboard.

Nice, I'd rather see a website these days than a phone number but good otherwise. At least it's an easy number :).
  16. Your opinions please!

Not a huge fan of the background, reminds me of an MS Word or Outlook template.
  17. Logo Making Template Software

Any client that wants a template logo is an opportunity to upsell them through knowledge. Clearly explain to them that any logo used from stock parts will not be able to be Trademarked and that if they ever want to grow they'll end up needing to rebrand and pay that money they were trying to...
  18. Start Up?

Also to answer the OP you aren't in a position to start your own business if you're living paycheck to paycheck. You should have at least six months salary banked, two years is even better (which is the low-end on the number of years before the average owner starts pulling salary from a...
  19. Start Up?

On the flip side the failure rates for businesses without partners is sky high. A good partnership is a like a marriage, should be no bullshit, total honesty, and the partners should all have complimenting talents. No one can know everything or do everything well, partners call you out on your...
  20. Half the class is bummed out...

It's true and it's not like i7 iMacs are top-end anyway. Lot of bitter old men in here. Designers buy new rigs every other year, students should have something that can at least handle the latest CS decently. Nothing kills learning or creativity faster than fighting the equipment...
