  1. Big squeegee

You put down laminate after you installed the vinyl? Why, no cold laminator in the shop?
  2. Canon iPF8100

Yeah I wouldn't be doing b&w prints, if I wanted to get into that I'd have a second machine with a carbon inkset. Thanks for the response.
  3. What print quality do you use to print your banners?

Where are you that digital banners are still "new"? I'm in a city of 50k and that's way too small for me as it is! These machines have been around for a decade now...longer if you count coated aqueous.
  4. What print quality do you use to print your banners?

Right on. While we still see some of our banners out there that are five years old or more from clients who didn't inform us*, if the sign is intended as long term and you specify banner in your estimate you aren't doing either of you a favor. Use the right solution for the problem! *Or more...
  5. Post Your: Signage related photos you see locally and grin

I have never heard of such a thing. Now I want some. Sign...SUCCESSFUL!
  6. Poor business strategy

This is actually a well known strategy known as the Red Velvet Rope strategy, coined by business author Michael Port -- I suggest reading his "Book Yourself Solid". You build a good customer base by getting rid of the bad customers. Pricing up to the point of absurd just to drive someone away...
  7. Exit Strategy for Sign Business

That is probably the best bet other than parting it out into equipment only, good suggestion.
  8. ai vs eps

Use a PDF workflow, Onyx supports it pretty well. All other options have downsides. PDF/X-4 is recommended usually though I think the SWOP color space is a bit small (I calibrate my own color spaces and created my own workflow). Illustrator->PDF, InDesign->PDF, Photoshop->.tif (with embedded...
  9. Canon iPF8100

How's the color gamut compared to your 9600? I'm interested in buying a 9880 but the Canon iPF line is tempting.
  10. Exit Strategy for Sign Business

That's kind of the point :thumb:. A 3 person shop is going to have a really tough time selling, as pointed out above it needs to be a place where one owner can step in as the last steps out and not much changes. Same goes for any business exit. I didn't mention the equipment as if all you're...
  11. Here's another preliminary concept

On the back I would have clipped around the guy instead of using that feather on the edges of the image (see attached) but otherwise nice job. A few transitions are a touch rough but much better than most wraps on the road.
  12. Exit Strategy for Sign Business

Good luck a vinyl shop is generally only worth the customer base + staff, if you're splitting up the staff you don't have a lot. Call a business broker. You'll need a complete inventory, gross and profit for the entire time you've been open, overhead costs, customer lists, the whole 9-yards...
  13. What print quality do you use to print your banners?

Mimaki solvent, never coat*, 720x720 8-pass fast for almost every banner because I'm a quality whore. Dropped to 4-pass for bulk runs with simple art. I tweak every job pretty extensively for the client/need. P.O.P./indoor is another discussion entirely. *Haven't had a single complaint, Mimaki...
  14. QR Codes in the Sign Biz

Had one on our shop van for a few years. There's still limited data out there that they actually drive traffic but marketing people sure do love them.
  15. $75,000

$75,000 is about what I'd expect for a city rebrand in all honesty. Not a great result but I don't have an issue with the pricing. You don't get from the article what all went into it, it's very possible there was an entire identity package which can be very extensive for a client like a city...
  16. Cement Mixer Truck....Full Color Wrap

You could maybe consider a 10mil polycarb lam or something but good luck wrapping with it. Sounds like a nightmare project, fun though if you can pull it off.
  17. My attempts at Vehicle half wraps

Agreed that was a very on-point article, as usual.
  18. My attempts at Vehicle half wraps

There's nothing wrong with script fonts, there is something wrong with using Brush Script. Anyway Rick covered most of my comments, though I'll say if someone can't afford a whole wrap maybe enter into a payment plan with them and do the whole thing at once, it's a lot easier for everyone than...
  19. Does your printer make you sleepy?

Get some good earphones, Shure is my recommendation. Cutting down the ambient db will save your hearing. Exposure to 85db or higher for an extended period is damaging and a lot of these large format printers produce that or more.
  20. GS6000 Regular Cleaning Frequency

How often you set the interval to will also depend on whether or not you're in a humidity managed environment. If you're not and the humidity gets low the 6 hour is definitely going to be beneficial. If you're managing it around 50% you could probably get away with less frequently.
