It means the Encoder does not recognise X motor movement, or the motor does not move when it should. It could be mechanical or electrical fault. If you somewhere close to Romford, I am happy to help to find out.
Seriously, I love old machines, repair cutters for 30 years, I just have some HS15 here as well, but that typewriter is before computers. I would not go back that far.

Yes, That chart in the manual is not always correct. Some Roland does not have all handshake pins connected. It shows on schematics.
You could manage handshake pins on Flexi, SignCut or some cutting softwares. just deselect RTS and CTS and leave only DTR enabled.
Or connect DB25 pin20. to DB9...
ColorChoice is the same thing as Flexi or Photoprint with limitations, and with no support. Most RIP softwares are still support FJ-52. I use to use it with PosterShop, PhotoPrint, Or PosterPrint softwares as well. ColorChoice still can be installed to Windows7 32bit computer with no issues.
