  1. Adobe PhotoShop Elements

I used to use Elements quite a bit, but I outgrew it quickly. All blending effects like drop shadow and glow are only available as canned text effects. You can't change the parameters or apply the effect to a bitmap selection. Text manipulation is also very limited. You can't make text...
  2. Does size really matter?

There's a market for printers in this size range. There are a lot of guys out there making money doing vehicle and industrial decals with a Gerber Edge. The Edge is only a 12" (yeah, TWELVE INCH) printer. A 24" CJV would be much faster, more economical and easier to use than the Edge. Its...
  3. MUTOH 1618 vrs 1614

If you are going to spend that kind of money you might want to look at the Mimaki JV5. It has 4 heads, more speed, bigger ink capacity, and some other cool tech for around $38k.
  4. Does size really matter?

That may be slow by high-volume sign shop standards, but it is still faster than any Roland Versacam, which is obviously the intended competition. These printers are really aimed more at vehicle graphics than volume sign work. The white ink option is huge for guys doing decals on clear and...
  5. Banding procedure

You might also try a different printing mode. The worst banding I've seen on the Mutoh VJ was in the high-speed 4-pass Banner 4 mode. I've never seen any banding worth talking about in the 8-pass modes -- Graphics 2 and Quality 4.
  6. Craptasmigorical.

I've been using Flexi 8.5 v1 for about 6 months to print on a Mutoh VJ and in all that time I can't recall EVER having Flexi crash or ruin a print. I run it on my design station and often am designing in Photoshop or using office applications while Flexi RIP's/prints. No stability problems...
  7. Ink

Best price I've had for Eco Ultra ink is from Signwarehouse, but I have them pricematch another vendor who has 220 ml carts at $59.99 (try here) Then I buy at least 6 carts so the total is over $300 and I get free shipping. So my total cost for OEM ink is $59.99 each for 6 220's. SW is in TX...
  8. 1204 vs 1604

Should be Banner 4 -- 720, bi, 4 pass. It is supposed to do 180 sqft/hr on the 1614. Make sure to set the print mode on the printer as well as in Flexi or you'll get weird results.
  9. 1204 vs 1604

You can use custom-cut 50" media and print on 48" in uni and have room to trim. About the only thing we print 48" wide are banners, and after hemming that goes down to 46", so for us the 47.2" bi print mode is sufficient. As for speed . . . we stopped using the high speed banner mode for...
  10. 1204 vs 1604

We have a 48" ValueJet, and I would say the only drawback is the fact that so much media comes in 54" rolls. We found a supplier who will cut down rolls for free, but it does push the media cost up a bit when you pay for 54" and print on only 48". For 24"x36" sign you can get your 54" media...
  11. Transfering data from one PC to another?

Buy a big USB flash drive for anything under 32 GB. Go CD-R or DVD-R for anything bigger. I've never had much luck with any kind of backup software.
  12. Linking my PC's Together w/o a Server?!? PLEASE HELP

The new Mimaki printers are using USB. Mimaki JV33 Specifications So you need: (1) USB printer cable sufficiently long to reach your printer (1) 4-port network router. Lynksis, Netgear, D-Link, whatever. (2) Ethernet patch cables long enough to reach your router. Set up the router...
  13. making custom decals with Epson 9880

I looked pretty hard at aqueous printers before I bought a Mutoh. A 44" Canon would have only cost $5000, while the Mutoh was over twice that much. However, after running the numbers the conclusion I came to was . . . The cost of the printer doesn't matter. HUH??? Whadayamean "cost...
  14. So MUTOH it is...

Lyson 2100 for Mutoh Valuejet Made by Nazdar, a major US ink manufacturer. It is offered in carts only, so it won't save you as much as bulk ink. However you'll save about 40% and you won't have to buy a bulk ink system. We haven't tried it yet but intend to do so once the warranty on ou...
  15. DC4...can this die cut like it's little brother?

So when is SignWarehouse going to start carrying Summa gear? (Wouldn't the Graphtec guys shit a brickyard ;-) )
  16. PrismJet VJ 1204

v1.00 The 1204AS appears to have its own firmware separate from the regular 1204A line. Since I have one of the first "AS" models I have the first version of the firmware.
  17. PrismJet VJ 1204

The other night I solved the problem with my VJ 1204AS not talking to my machine. By default, my VJ was set to 192.168.1.253 My D-link router assigns IP addresses from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199. I belive other routers use the 192.168.1.xxx domain, but D-link uses 192.168.0.xxx. I...
  18. PrismJet VJ 1204

Well, I got through testing my printer out and it turns out that Randya is WRONG! My VJ 1204AS actually does have Banner 2 (540x720 bi). I just got though printing a 3' wide banner on B2 and clocked it at 87 sqft/hr. That's pretty close to Mutoh's published speed of 98 sqft/hr, and the...
  19. Printing 48" on VJ-48 With Flexi

Actually I spoke to Jim the other day about getting 8.5v2 when we were discussing my Prismjet firmware issue. Signwarehouse overnighted me a copy. If they take care of the firmware issue just as quickly I will be a very satisfied customer.
  20. Coputer hardware pros only

When you are talking about hard drive performance you are looking mainly at two things -- access time and transfer rate. Access time is how fast the hard drive can find the data while transfer rate is how fast it can transfer the data to memory once it found it. The rotational speed mostly...
