  1. Need Help Tech Question - Roland VS-640

Carriage board is the head board. Proper name is print carriage board.
  2. Leaking Roland Epson DX7 printhead L1440-U2

Have you checked the lines from the captop to the pump are completely free and all the connections? and also that the pump is working properly? If the pump doesn't clear the captop properly then ink can sit in it and soak back up into the head. Normally a bad head plate will give you really...
  3. Need Help Network chip Roland VP540

As someone who repairs boards I agree with you. Yes, sometimes you can fix a board by replacing components, if that is what has failed. However, with the VP, lots of people have tried replacing network chips and other parts, and not been able to fix it. There is a known design problem with the...
  4. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

Did you take the chip from your old board or buy a blank one? If you are using the old one it will still have the firmware on it so you won't need to load anything on
  5. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

Well done, did all the shorts go as well?
  6. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

I thought the same :) A reflow is most likely, but that will fail again in time
  7. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

Odd that AI haven't mentioned that there is a know manufacturing fault with these boards that causes bad connections?
  8. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

And yet you still haven't fixed it....
  9. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

Ai again :D basically it is just telling you to check everything
  10. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

Swapping the main chip is a good way to end up with two dead boards :D I would only really consider it as a last resort. Removing it can be useful to see if the shorts then vanish, but that will only confirm the chip is bad not that the board will work properly with the other chip installed...
  11. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

More investigation then! This is what I meant when i said it's never as simple as just replacing a couple of components. You need to know why those components shorted, and what else is connect to them in the signal path now
  12. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

Did you test them for shorts off the board as well? Also when you remove them you need to test the pads to see if the shorts disappear. If they do then the component was at fault, if they don't then the component is most likely fine and the short is coming from something else connected to the...
  13. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

Totally agree, I also have a degree in EE and circuit design and 9 times out of 10 it is slogging through the circuit and testing and diagnosing
  14. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

    Which ones were they?
  15. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

Not to mention these days the schematics companies supply often don't actually match the board :/. which just makes it even more annoying. Then you get ICs with a number on them that doesn't exist when you google it!
  16. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

On most boards I have worked on it has been different components fail. Unfortunately there isn't any one that is more likely to be the problem, which is why tracking the fault isn't simple. As a basic start ; 1) With your IR camera, check for obvious shorts 2) Check electrolytic capacitors for...
  17. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

I have had to replace different parts depending on what the problem is. There is no one definitive answer on what causes a lack of power. This is why you need to trace the whole board power signals to find out where it is failing. If you can't do this yourself, then you need to get someone to...
  18. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

It's about as true as what AI has told you :D They have basically said replace 90% of the components on the board, which is fine, but still won't fix your problem
  19. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

p.s. yes you are right, I have been holding back the secret! Replace C126 and R14 and it will 100% work fine again...
  20. ROLAND VP-540 Will not power up

it is also often wrong :D
