Censorship

I started writing a lengthy post on this one and decided better. All I can say is that sign man signs has my sympathy for his loss. I do get extremely frustrated when things are censored. I can look away, or choose to disagree. It isnt like he was posting porn or something!! Rules to protect someone rom being offended plays straight into the "politically correct" movement, which I totally despise!!

After reading through this thread... for the record... and this is the only thing that I have to say about this...

what sign-man posted... I agreed with... totally. It had nothing to do with offending anyone and everything to do with being fair. If I had not deleted it, I would have been accused of playing favorites with my political point of view... and we saw what has happened because I did.

No one "won" in this case. Not one single person. We lost a good member... and what was done by me was done with no malice or ill-intent on my part. The last thing I wanted was for him to be this hurt or upset by it.

The whole situation just sucks big-time.

So really why does stating ones opinion have to lead to hostility?
Being an adult usually comes with the ability to agree to disagree.
I do see your point, however it is annoying

Being offended has everything to do with it! It is the emotions from "being offended" that breed the hostility. I agree the hostility is maybe more of the problem, but the root cause is the emotions stirred in someone when they have an opposing view to some issue they are passionate about. Sometimes you just gotta read something u dont like or disagree with and not get emotional to the point of hostility.

You are a class-act for your explanation. I do try to respect rules on here. It does make me feel good knowing that it was deleted with a "heavy heart". Id never think you had ill intent toward anyone Bigdawg. I just struggle with political correctness every day.

cognitive dissonance

anxiety that results from simultaneously holding contradictory or otherwise incompatible attitudes, beliefs, or the like, as when one likes a person but disapproves strongly of one of his or her habits.

David's comment is relevant in so many ways... I think it was directed back at Jackpine's post, & by extension, Arlo & my defense of the question of confliction in Jackpine's post...

But to really discuss Jackpine's post would require venturing way too far into global politics... SO, let's talk signs101 politics...

We have rules.
They are not perfect.
They were created by flawed humans & are upheld by flawed humans.

We have to at least try to follow the same rules the same way every time.
Cognitive Dissonance is absolutely relevant here... but I gotta leabe for a business meeting... you guys hash it out...

you are truely fair and balanced. setting aside your personal feelings, you were able to do the admin duties which is why you are so good for the position. the situation does suck and I hope with all my heart that he comes back as we will miss him and no one here did anything with any malice or ill-intent. I hope that he comes back, sees this thread and re-joins his signs101 family.

I have many mixed feelings on this, but they're all for naught, because I don't know WHAT was said vs. what is now posted, so I cannot comment.

None of this seems to be about what anyone thinks or feels, but more about the rules. The rules clearly defined what Stacy had to do. Was it fair ?? I dunno. What is beneficial ?? I dunno. Will it happen again ?? Probably.

So, here goes my one and only thought........ Stacy.... were you contacted in any way by a member other than the board or other officials as to this particular post or statement accusing you of being unfair or playing favorites ??

That's not fair. I didn't ask who or what was said or to divulge any information, just if you were contacted by any member other than on the staff so to speak about what you stated. If that is too delicate of information to say yes or no or how many complaints.... I'm sorry.

I think one thing I learned from my short time on the board here at signs101, is the amount of thought and consideration that goes into every single act by the admins here. Behind closed doors when discussing decisions that would effect us all, they displayed an immeasurable amount of patience and respect for all of the members here. From what I saw, they try their hardest to keep everyone's best interest at heart, from the merchants to the premium subscribers and especially the non premium members. I think seeing that allowed me to understand and respect Fred and Stacy probably at a different level than some on here.

Keeping that all in mind, and I hope you read my post Sign Man, you have to take into consideration their motives and the thought behind their decision to edit your post. I think people overlook that these days and I think if you factored in the reasons for what they did, you wouldn't be so upset. Because from what I see, they didn't intend to disrespect or hurt you in anyway. It is obvious now that they only wanted to keep a post that in my oppinion should be seen by all members from taking a political turn and being sent into the NHB where it wouldn't be seen by all. And if you really think about it.... that was a good decision, and hopefully you will understand that it wasn't meant to remove any rights, or censor you, or hurt your feelings. Hopefully you will figure this out and come back.

i was in service 1965-1969, because i HAD TO(draft), lost a lot of good friends to a really bad reasoned war. was told not to travel IN UNIFORM, because of how the nation felt about the war and its people who was serving it.
this day is for REMEMBRANCE & RECOGNITION to all who have given their lives to defend this nation, without PLACING BLAME or DENIGRATING any of the politicians who made these wars possible for WHATEVER REASON.
sign man signs, your personal pain, is something none can relate to, no amount of words will ever soften it. it is a loss that will never diminish. WE, ALL WHO READ YOUR POST, will feel a touch of your pain, because we know and care about YOU!!!!!!!! that in itself, is what is important.
if you would like to expound on your POLITICAL LIKE/DISLIKE of the politics of GW, please go over to NO HOLDS BARRED...........and say all you want to..............PLEASE, but dont leave 101, we do APPRECIATE KNOWING YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know this is some kind of deal breaker, or alliance with the devil but I find myself agreeing with OP... and I must also say this must be one of the nicest thing he has ever posted, just when I was enjoying disliking you...
dang it...
I also want to say although I do not know Sign man very well, I cannot even come close to understanding his loss, and my heart goes out to all that have served, and to all who have lost their lives, and to all the families who lost some one, THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SERVICE, WITH OUT IT WHERE WOULD WE BE!! (and yeah you to OP )

if there were such a thing as "a pass"... of course this would have been the time for one, BUT THERE ISN'T... and the people who have been given authority to moderate according to EXISTING policy, are NOT given authority to INVENT passes...

...and it wasn't about the comments that SMS made anyway... it's about what ALWAYS happens when such comments start dividing us. NOBODY has shown disrespect to the tragedy of his son laying down his life in our service...

...but if "politics" had been allowed to start, there is just far too great a chance for an escalation into uglyness that would have really been disrespectful... that risk is why the rules were made & why they were followed...

Perfect example of hindsight being 20/20... now that we learn how unhappy SMS felt, it's easy for the armchair moderators to choose a different path.. leading is more difficult than following, & you can't second guess the leader because you don't share their view of the challenges they face BEFORE you get to ponder over an alternate course of action.
