Father teaches daughter a lesson about Facebook

Kids are stupid... heck people are stupid. They post letters, photos, videos of themselves on Facebook and Youtube. People rob or beat someone up and post it online. They drive 120 on a freeway and post it. They take pics of themselves naked and send it to their boyfriend/girlfriend. Some assume almost no one will see it, while others hope everyone will so they can show off. Voyeuristic society

When I was growing up I couldn't see hardcore porn freely. I couldn't find graphic videos of people blowing off someone's head or chopping off limbs. Or photos of dead/decapitated innocent people. No girls and cups. There was no way for a pedofile or rapist to contact me in my own home. I couldn't be cursed at or degraded on a daily basis from nameless or faceless individuals. If my enemies wanted to make fun of me, bully me or call me names and spread lies they couldn't do it from the luxury of their keyboard.

The internet is still in it's infancy and very dangerous if not monitored

I Fully agree, and like him, If my daughters get a facebook account, it will be monitored. something like this venting however, would be something that is watched, adressed personally if continued, and not reacted upon in a manner unbecoming of my own maturity.

My previous post was basically trying to say this... raising a kid is much harder than it used to be. You can monitor their computers, but they can still find and watch anything they want on their phones, ipads and ipods.

Society is allowing violence to be more acceptable. I grew up with Atari. I blew up dots in missile command, pixelated tanks and space invaders. New games are very realistic and many adults don't realize the content in the games they play. I have been in stores and watched as parents buy their young kids M rated games and probably have no idea of the content

Music lyrics are much more offensive. How many people buy their kids itunes gift cards but don't monitor what songs they download? The words and themes now are blatant. Before sexuality was implied and subtle and I did not realize what was being said. So yeah, there were songs about sex and violence in the 60's 70s and 80s but I was too young and naive to realize what they were saying. Now it seems like every CD/song has a parental advisory sticker

TV has also changed. We were very close to watching girls swallow Donkey juice

It's interesting to me how many people just assume the daughter is in the wrong here without hearing the whole story. Guy comes across as the kind of dick who would use his kids as slaves because he thinks they owe him that.

When I grew up I didn't get paid for household chores, when I helped my dad in the fields I got paid. That's how I raised by son. When a child thinks they are entitled to something, they probably will think the same way as an adult.

If it was my daughter I would lock her up in the basement and feed her pizza and pancakes, because that was all that would fit under her door.

All I am saying is that her actions are not even close to the brink of abnormal teenage behavior, however his actions are, as I see it, abnormal Adult behavior.

I'm not a violent person I have a 3 year old son and I have never laid a hand on him. And I would def not of handled it like this guy. Obviously there is two sides to every story but unless he is totally fabricating her FB post she deserved to be disciplined. Of course I did and most kids have done similar things to our parents. But she GOT CAUGHT and if I got caught I would of understood my Fathers reaction. The way you put it she shouldn't of gotten in trouble at all. Or maybe he is what she is saying. And maybe the stepmother is a b#$%ch. That is rediculous

Just like I know now what I said about my parents behind their backs was wrong and disrespectful. And whatever punishment I recieved (weather I would handle it that way with my son or not) was warranted.

My dad would have made me destroy the computer myself, just to be certain I understood the point he was trying to teach me about "respect" and how important it is. Too many parents today want to be "friends" with there kids, and feel bad when little Johnny has to sit, or God forbid kneel in the corner for 10 minutes. They have forgotten how important respect (not fear)is to a child's development, and while you may not agree with his methods you can't ague that he is trying his best to bring his daughter up to be a better person, and someday I bet she looks back and realizes just how right he was, maybe even thanks him for teaching her to respect others.

I agree with Eric (and lots of others here). I do feel like every kids is different though, and having two kids, I'm reminded more and more of that every day.

I think it was totally stupid for him to handle it this way first off. Generally, kids that act like that, (I'm just saying generally, I know it's not always this way) act that way because they saw it acted out by someone very close to them in their life. I can totally see him being the exact same way, but he didn't have FB to post it on when he was a kid. So basically, he freaked out like he would have as a kid (like his daughter did) as an adult, which is totally uncool.

I have a 3 yr old daughter that is in the "decision making" part of life. She disobeys and I used to spank her. She thought it was hilarious, and it had ZERO effect on her. It ended up that she got the picture way easier just being talked to, and sitting on a set. As a parent, I think that's the lamest thing ever when I see parents do that, but now, I realize every kid is different.

They both screwed up. This is the kind of stuff that you don't make public...both of them screwed the pooch on that one. Talk to your kids, take stuff away, whatever, but don't air your dirty laundry so a bunch of sign makers are typing away talking about it all day.

Quit buggin' me
I'm with the dad on this one.
If you go to his facebook page there is a lot more info.
He answers some of the critics questions and the answers there seem to me to be well reasoned and laid out.
My dad grew up poor working at a very young age in the oil fields of Tx & La, his ideas on hard work transferred to us kids in a very direct way.
He did pretty good with us.
We don't know the whole story here but this girl is almost 16 and she is getting ready to step out into the world. The world today is hard and only getting harder, not many outside of her family are going to care much about her feelings on anything.
Her dad teaching her that actions have consequences this way does not seem that harsh to me.

The guy was on his own at age 15 going to high school and college and 4 jobs. Wonder if he moved out because his dad grounded him and shot up his slate board because he was writing mean things about his parents.

Just to be clear I never said she shouldn't be punished, you gotta sit her down and explain life is work and you work you get things, my beef is using the firearm. Make her post the laptop on craig's list and watch it leave for a low price- or give it away or whatever.

In today's world of Columbine, and Virginia Tech, etc. We need better examples of firearm use. My beef is the firearm!

A sledge hammer would have sent a better message, and like I said it isn't my style and no Gary my parenting style is not the reason for the kids being the way they are today. Not by a long shot.

I'm thinking more like MIA parents, poor economy, drug use, and alcoholism for starters.

If it was me and wanting to have a lasting image on her, I would have wiped the hard drive packaged it on video and sent it to someone more deserving or appreciative.

"My beef is the firearm!"

I think you missed here.
At that range a 45 auto with hollow point shells has the correct stopping power to take out a laptop when hit center mass like that.

You have to be careful, if he had used a something like a 22 and it escaped with just a wound it could've re-booted and come back at him.

If it had been a Mac pro he would have needed something bigger than a 45, their cases are milled from solid billet titanium or something....
