How should I lay out on sheet for trimming

Hi all,

Please bear with me as I'm fearful this is a noob question. Rightfully so though because I'm a noob :)

Background info: I've been a print broker for over 12 years and recently purchased a SP-300 from one of my suppliers due to having enough work to keep it running steadily and with the hopes of starting a small shop that other family members can take over in a few years.

I have an order for 5000 pieces of 2X3 straight cut static clings and I'm wondering what the best way to lay them up on the sheet and then trim them would be?

I know in an offset sheetfed print shop we would use crop marks and a guillotine cutter where we could drawn the lines to connect the crop marks on the top sheet for a layout but I currently only have a 48" straight edge ruler. I was thinking of trimming them to 12 across strips and then getting a paper cutter from Staples to trim each 12up strip.

Does that sound like an effecient way to do it, or can someone recommend some other tips?

Thanks in advance,
Tony

5000x with SP-300 --- holy all day printing hehe -- Why not sub it out to a wholesaler that will do it? Cut :0)

Normally I sub everything out but the point is to bring work in to pay off the machine. I can have the printer running all day while doing other things and I also have my brother doing all the trimming so he can earn a few extra bucks.

You have to babysit statics. You cant use a take up reel. They need drying time. Use an xacto knife and a straight edge. no need for the paper cutter. It just pulls on the static.

Definitely going to take a long time and they are small enough you may be able to just cut them with scissors.
And if you have any print quality issues use the high quality setting. Sometimes when printing on static cling
The quality isn’t so good so I have had to bump the setting up to high quality and use the clear calendared vinyl profile.
Good luck

I would sub this one out to a specialist...

however congrats on the low overheads, nothing cheaper than a family sweat shop.

Cut with a ruler, however invest in one of the safety rulers. Cutting 5000 will make your brother slap-happy and thats when the knife slips and you are hunting for finger tips.

You will have to run at the slowest speed to give them time to dry, and you may want to hang them for a few hours before you cut.

Just a thought, the SP300 cuts too? does it have PERFCUTCONTOUR to cut the backing sheet?

What is the sum of the parts?......I would think at the quantity, you can buy the finished product for less than the sum of the parts....
