Newatthis, you go for it. Most of the ill mannered people that ragged on you and continue to do so are more than likely just greedy a$$holes that think a little talent should mean they get to have the play ground to themselves and keep it the way they want it. I can't remember his name but there is a guy on here that does have the kind of talent to make him stand out with his carved signs and people like you or me will likely never intrude on his part of the sign business. The ones ragging everyone probably have little if any real talent and are expecting a little "education" to keep them on top of the world and are afraid to compete with the "talentless" vinyl cutters and shredders. They might also keep in mind that not everyone has the same opportunity to get an education and coming to forums (like this one among others) is their efforts to get some piece of an education. If they had half the talent they assumed they have, they would look very foolish trying to put people down that are trying to make a better life for themselves and their family's. I have a very unique situation where I have to care for my wife 24 / 7 and am trying to make a small niche for myself in this business and while I am very thin skinned, I get as angry as I do hurt so any ragging on me will not have the desired effect of running me out of their way. I will plant my feet even more firmly and stand square in their way. I am about to move back home to Pensacola and will have one of the worst of them to contend with and he can try to run me out of business if he wants but, like him, I don't have to rely on this as my bread and utilities and will butt heads with him if he wants. If, by the chance his bark is worse than his bite, I will love giving him and myself the opportunity to get to know each other and then decide if we can or should be friends. I try to be open minded about people till I get to know them personally. Sorry this sounds like I've started ranting so I need to end this post but don't let a few wannabe prima-donnas cause you lose out on the good you can get from this forum. Good luck.

I can't believe some of you people are serious with your replies here. Are you remotely seriously scared that a housewife looking to make a few extra bucks in her basement to pay for her kids hockey equipment is going to threaten you in any way as a sign company? This silly mentality is going haywire around here.. seems everyone, no matter how innocent gets the same stupid accusations as if they are going to singlehandedly take down the industry.

There's nothing wrong whatsoever with spending a few bucks to build yourself what is essentially a scrapbooking hobby gone berzerk and make a few bucks to help support your childrens growth. Get that plotter, have a ball learning how to use it.. the prices you charge will fall in line with what you need to make to do the things you expect from your venture. No amount of online petty bitterness will change that.

Please, signs101 people, spit out the bitter pills and get back to being nice and helpful folks.

Some of these comments may or my not be true, there are some people here and on this thread who are trying to understand where the person is coming from. And there are some lame comments, ignore them. We do get a lot of newbie traffic that has turned on experienced ones too. I don't think it's fair to lump newbies into a particular catagory, in turn it's not fair to lump everyone on this thread or randomly throwing names out.

The person you are vaguely calling has a strong opinion, not shared by everyone including myself. I have been reading his post for almost 10 years, have not meet him, but have heard he is a really nice guy in person. Take the information supplied, incorporate the good stuff, reject the stuff that does not apply, simple as that.

I actually thought newatthis was going to make it - maybe she still will, IDK. She is pretty stubborn, I liked her spunk! She must be used to dealing with a bunch of sniveling whiny little boys. hahaha

Prob is a lot of people jump into this industry with no talent, undercut, put out poor work, and disappear after a couple years, but negatively affecting the industry, even if it's just in a small way, as they do it.

Heck, I should know. I started off the same way! But got beat into submission. lol.

BTW, I like your spunk girl. Just learn all you can, always keep trying, listen to the pro's and best of luck!

Get Corel and a Roland Plotter you can cut directly from corel . You'll need 1. talet,
2. patience 3. determination. (won't work without all three) But anything is possible.
Good Luck

What is the better deal: RolandGX-24 or Roland CJ-60 for a $1,000 (with just cutting feature)? I think that was the question raised.

Hi Rick. I know I shoot my opinions out at the wrong times, usualy when I'm angry or depressed or both. As for the person I vaguly refered to, I have read a lot of his posts and he realy doesn't sound any meaner than me. After paying attention to more of what he has to say, it looks like he is a little like me but not as bad. His posts seem to reflect a lot of knowledge (unlike me) and some of how his day is going comes through (not as bad as me). Sorry OP.

Hey Guys,
I just came here to hopefully find something I needed and came across my old thread and found it was dragged up again. I bet you guys are all wondering if I stuck with it, and the answer is yes. It has been a crazy couple of months of learning. I didn't realize what I was in for, some nights have been really late but there getting shorter and easier.

I'm going back to school for graphic design in April, who would of thought you need to know how to design to make signs:doh: I haven't made a dime because it has all gone back into my business for materials ect. I'm enjoying the challenge and every time I get pissed off because I can't figure something out and after I'm done running around kicking things, I always come back and figure it out. Sometimes something that seems so easy can take me hours but it's just the learning process I suppose.

I have been making a lot of vehicle lettering and I put a lot of effort into it, to get it perfect and when it's done I'm not ashamed to say it's mine :clapping: I got a call back from a guy who wants his other nine trucks done the same as the first three I did, lucky for me it's the same design:tongue: This will pay for my kids hockey next year, this was my goal when I started.

If I had to give advice to another Newbie i would tell them that it's in no way, shape or form an easy thing to learn on your own, it's possible but not easy. If your looking for a quick easy way to make money this is not it.

That being said I really do enjoy it and love the finished product. I'm not going to own a sign shop next week but maybe in a few years :peace!:

Glad to see we were not all full of BS

For people doing this for a living we`ve all had the problems you`re facing right now........for me ...a long time ago :banghead:

You left pretty angry last time with your few first posts but i can see now you are serious about design...

Anyone can hit cut or print but not everyone can draw!

THAT`S WHAT WILL KEEP YOU GOING

You will get good advice from :signs101: from people who do this for a living
Dont be afraid to also use the search function

Best of luck and Way to go for Design school :clapping::clapping::clapping:

And :Welcome:

Cheers

Great news!!
I'm glad you stuck with it, and some of what you learned vindicated some of what was said earlier (except probably not my stuff:doh:)
...I think you must have changed your avatar since then, because I would never have been so rude to someone with an avatar with such a beautiful lakefront view in it :toasting:
Welcome back to the wacky 101 world!

I have a pretty good read on people pretty quickly and I am glad you are still at it; even heading the right direction. I applaud your efforts, spunk, style and hard work...that is what is needed to survive and overcome in ANY business. Hope to see you highly successful someday soon and don't forget to have fun.
