Profanity on wraps???

Bob, it’s a village called…. In practice, the FCC fines for "f**k" and "s**t" but not "b**ch" and "a$$." The FCC can only fine broadcasts which means that cable television is not censored due to government regulations but due to the channel's own decency guidelines

The current fine is $7000 per infraction, which was lowered from $12,500 in 1997. This is probably because swear words are more common and less vulgar and because the fine alone was an incentive for some people to swear, and some people to listen.

The following rules apply to broadcasts in America as regulated by the FCC:

Obscene broadcasts are prohibited at all times. Obscene material meets all of the following three tests: (a) an average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest, (b) the material must depict or describe, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable law, (c) the material, taken as a whole, must lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value. Basically, obscene material is pornographic or similarly suggestive sexual material.

Indecent Broadcasts Restricted to 10 P.M. - 6 A.M. Indecent is as defined by the Supreme Court in their decision: language or material that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory organs or activities.

It should be noted that some uses of "***" (such as using the word as an action verb meaning sexual intercourse) can be considered obscene, but "***," being a excretory activity, cannot. Women's breasts and all genitalia are considered obscene, so you will never see that on television until "contemporary community standards" get lower.

So, although my choice of ‘ILLEGAL’ for using these words stands corrected… anytime I’m fined $7,000 or $12,500 for uttering this word on radio or television is going to be enforced…. I’ll listen to them before I listen to a bunch of wannabe designers who think it’s Okay to do this crap.

Substituting the word with another still has the same mindset when using naughty words unlike the vulgar ones, but for some reason…. that is accepted. So for those that say Oh Shoot or Oh Fudge…. You’re only kidding yourself that your kid has no idea of what’s really on your mind, but at least you’re not breaking any rules.

Now, this place, 101, is for gathering information that is for the most part…. tried and true. So, why would anyone in their right mind tell someone asking this question to go ahead and do it unless they are just trying to get the OP in hot water ?? Please do yourself and others reading this that these are only the beliefs in your own mind and not the way of our land… in our country. Had this been written by someone in Europe, the answers would be totally different.

This is the same as someone asking… can one eat glass ?? Sure, anyone can eat it. There is no reason why you can’t and there aren’t any laws on the books preventing one from doing so. Just don’t tell them the consequences afterwards. Omitting the important part of an answer is somewhat harmful to one’s health…. and in the case of this thread… possibly their pocketbook.

Well, sorry about that. In this case it was a direct quote and I didn't think for a second it would matter.

Stacy, I wasn't pushing any buttons. I apologize.

you're ALL always testing the waters until you find a nice little warm spot and then you'll all jump in
Just to find out someone has already pissed in it.

not at all, I agree with him. Profanity has no place in public.

Then don't use any in public.

It's a marvelous Good Thing that you are not in a position that allows you to inflict your rather provincial prejudices on others.

Oh, I just realized I didn't need to apologize to you Stacy, but you still took the credit. EGADS !! :peace!:

I owe Bobby Fosson the apology. So....... Sorry Bobby and Happy New Year. :toasting:

The part I find peculiar is... I never swear here or on the back side of the forum and the one time I quote it... I get picked off. I would either like to see a standard for this action across the board and not certain things fly or let it all hang out. Not dictating how things should be run here, but what's fair for the goose is fair for the gander. That's the only fair way. Either do it or don't. Picking when and where doesn't seem to fit your rules.

:thankyou:

That's one of those idiotic things that people, who wouldn't know a right if it bit them in the ass, are fond of saying.

A right is something that is impossible to violate. Especially by someone else exercising an actual right of their own.

If something is possible of violation then it's not a right, merely behavior that's tolerated for the moment by your fellow tribesmen. Calling such a privilege a 'right' does not make it so.

Bob, would Colorado allow you to name your shop "Mother F*^cking Bad*$$ed Signs" if you wanted to? Would they allow you to post a sign in front of your shop that said that? Would they allow you if the sign had a couple of naked strippers on it?

Just curious.

Yes. But I question your phrasing. Law, at least good law that has a snowball's chance in hell of withstanding any sort of challenge, tells me what is proscribed, it does not tell me what is allowed. Moreover it must tell me specifically and without any vagueness.

If I were to do so, it's certain the church ladies of the local chowder and marching society would be outfitting a gunboat to sail up the irrigation canal and shell me. They don't need to pay attention to any pesky law, they've got the light of jesus burning in their eyes and they by god know evil when they see it.

Then there would be legions of lawyers defending the pure against the forces of darkness pouring over all manner of obscure regional and local codes looking for some edict or another that might shut me up. However obliquely. And they might find something that could be interpreted as supporting their position. But whatever that might be, probably something like inciting moral turpitude, blocking someone's view, or something equally silly, it absolutely positively would not be any sort of direct condemnation of my choice of freedom of expression. That's protected by the first amendment of the US Constitution.

People who say "Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say that!" demonstrate a lack of comprehension of the notion of freedom of speech. The concept exists to protect unpopular speech, not to reinforce provincial prejudices.
