The expert comes in and says it could be worth at least $150,000 maybe more. So the Guy sells for $90,000????? Anyone in their right mind would not take a 6 figure collector's item and sell it and take that kind of loss, if the expert was right about it's value!

That's what I've been saying for months!!!

I can't speak for all the shows out there, but I can say that I was on "The Little Zoo That Could", a 13 week series on Animal Planet back in 2006. it was about the zoo in Gulf Shores that was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan and rebuilt. I was only there for the last 3 months of filming, when the zoo reopened. There wasn't anything staged about it. Of course, there wasn't any crazy drama unfolding every week, either.

What always gets me is the profit percentages that seem to appeal to some of the regulars, as well as the time and effort required to go to an auction, move all the contents you bought, clean it up and find a buyer. Typical profit that makes them happy would be $1500 for a locker and $2000 value for a $500 profit. Whoopee! What a great return on my risk, two days of my time, fuel, storage costs and a trip to the chiropractor from all the heavy lifting.

I have never believed that they are "real", but it doesn't stop me from watching. It is entertainment, plain and simple. Not only that, but my daughter loves watching it with me and she gets to learn a bit of history. Nothing wrong with a little educational father-daughter time.

Joaquin Phoenix made a movie called "Im Still Here" which was to make fun of "Reality TV" shows. Everyone thought he went crazy but he was just trying to show you that just because it says reality tv doesnt make it real. Its still entertaining even though its fake is how I feel.

I really liked American Pickers, at first. I think it was pretty legitimate. But the shows are getting more "scripted" feeling, as always happens with these shows.
But what about a reality show in a sign shop? I think that would have lots of potential. Or do it like Axmen, with one shop in Vegas, one in NYC, one in Hollywood....

Storage Wars might be fake, but I have a friend that buys storage sheds and it's amazing what he finds in them at the price he pays for them. One of the sheds a couple of years ago he paid $150.00 for it and it was jamed packed with what looked like junk untill he got to the back that's where it all paid off for him, there were 16 rifles from the civil war,a couple of machine guns, a slew of daggers and a bunch of other war items, then there was the "BOX" in this box was gold, silver, 3 real Rolex watches and lots of cash, so for 150 bucks I guess it is worth buying storage sheds. Maybe I should leave the sign business and start buying storage sheds at auction, LOL

So let me get this straight, someone had all these valuable items in a storage locker,

Couple of machine guns

Slew of daggers and a bunch of other war items

Box filled with gold, silver, 3 real Rolex watches and lots of cash

All these items worth thousands and thousands of dollars, and just leaves them in a storage locker and then doesn't pay the rental on the locker, a few hundred dollars, and then looses everything?

I don't buy this story, you have to be a fool to leave gold, silver, 3 real Rolex watches and lots of cash in a storage locker. These are small items you keep at home in a safe under your bed or in a safety deposit box at a bank.

Every time a locker is auctioned off, the owner of the contents is notified before hand and given a chance to pay the back rent and retrieve them property, I can see why a lot of people leave their household junk behind because they owe more back rent on the unit than the contents is worth, but surely you don't leave your 16 rifles from the civil war, couple of machine guns, sew of daggers, a bunch of other war items, and a box filled with gold, silver, 3 real Rolex watches and lots of cash.

That's not even believable to me, do you know where your GOLD and CASH are right now?

Well then those actors/actresses on the show "Intervention" are very, very good at playing drug addicts!!! And the people who fill houses with trash, old food, dead cats, mold, scum and everything else on the show "Hoarders" should win major awards for set design!!!

I never knew they were fake! I had my suspicions about Storage Wars, Pawn Stars, Shipping Wars, American Pickers, American Restoration, Canadian Pickers and such, but I thought Intervention & Hoarders were somewhat "real". Well, glad I know they're fake now. I'll stop watching those too!!

We've had storage units for about 10 years. The process to actually be able to auction off a unit to try and collect your back payments is crazy. At least here in WV.

It cost about $150 dollars to the magistrate for him to send the renters a couple notices of back rent. [certified letter] Then you have to publish in the local newspaper about the upcoming auction on said unit. After all this, a County Deputy holds the auction. This is mandatory. Same as for real estate. If no one shows up to bid, the unit then belongs to us. Luckily for us, hardly anyone shows up for any of these auctions.

In other words, we get to take all the trash to the garbage dump. In the 10 years we had the units, we've only gotten a few items worth considering valuable. One being a Motor Cycle. We had to get the ignition switch changed, send for a new title and get it running. We were still able to sell it for a small profit.

I know of others that have storage units that never go the route above. They just cut the lock off the units, sift thru the stuff and get rid of the garbage. One guy has rental apartments, so he uses some of the funiture for these.

You can belive it or not, but it's a true story. On some of the storage units it's not only the money the people owe on them, but some have died or even went to prison, just from the papers and files you find in some of the storage units you get to sorta know about the people that rented it. So it's not always about what they owed, they just might not be around anymore.

Just the two nights ago on the local news here in Florida, they discovered a dead womans body in a storage locker. Not sure but they think the relatives put her there because they could not afford a proper burial yet.

Don't forget the king of all scripted TV - Pro Wrestling. EVERYTHING is scripted and it still draws better crowds than the NBA and NHL.

In the end - the lemmings just want to be entertained to take their minds off their everyday world... so what does it matter. I watch Gold Rush just to see who gets killed first.

If they filmed an actual reality show - with no editing and minimal audio - no one would watch because real life is pretty boring... well, except porn, but thats a whole other issue isn't it.
