It is common in Roland printers the faulty network port on mainboard, But still would not mention motherboard change until making sure, network configured properly.
The only way to fix the VP ethernet connectivity is with a new main board. The main board is not available anymore. You can keep heat by the chassis and that will witk. for a while.
Yes, same Main Board for VP-300 and VP-540. It has to be programmed, can’t just swap it.
If Ethernet works just one time the parameters can be taken from the old board.
If not, board will need to be programmed from scratch.

You don't need to program the board as such, you just set the DIP switches for the correct model, then do the normal calibrations to dial it in and change the network settings in VW. It is easier to take the settings from the old board, but not vital.
