We still mostly use a very old Epson 3000, though these days you seldom see them for sale.
The black ink is a pigment.
You can do halftones in Photoshop.
the film we use was simply called a Dutch film positive film - sort-of milky clear and vaguely blueish but good.
We also do smaller A4 positives on our old Lesmark laser printer T430.
It took a while to figure the settings to get it to make a halftone, but the dots are beautiful.
You have to set it to print, then walk away for 5-10 minutes while it thinks about it!
We print on laser acetate for that.
