Did you input all of the values of the main board settings? They're on a sticker. You must do t his after you replace a main board. You should either get yourself a service manual, or hire a technician to do this for you.

In my opinion, your best bet is to bite the bullet and get the latest OS and any purchase any software upgrades that are required along with it. You're just kickin' the can down the road if you don't.

Just want to add, make sure to use isopropyl alcohol and a lint free cloth when cleaning encoder discs/strips, and clean in one direction (no scrubbing). I heard of someone using mutoh eco solvent on an encoder strip and it melted it >.< edit: where's that nozzle check? :)

I've encountered a VJ-1604 that wouldn't power on. I didn't test anything, I just swapped out the power board assy. (under the platen), and it fired right up.

If you're checking all of the small UV printers out, make sure to look at the VJ-426UF and VJ-626UF. However, I believe they use the same Epson DX7 heads as the Roland, so you're probably looking at similar quality as what you're currently using. I'm not sure if there's small UV printer that...

You said you ran a nozzle check, but you didn't say how it looked. If you're having damper issues, it would manifest in the nozzle check. Let's see how it looks.

Here's a crazy idea. Get some tracing paper and some charcoal (or whatever) over the sign. When you're done, clean up the lines, scan it, vectorize it, and send it to your plotter.

Car guys will hate it. As I'm not a car guy, I freaking love it! The fact that the lettering describes a car that doesn't exist is a freaking cherry on top! :)

Never seen any issues like this with solvent-based ink, cast lam, and cast vinyl. Regardless of what the previous shop did, if you use the correct materials, you won't have the same problem (in my humble opinion).
