  1. Discussion How do you see it? What is it going to take to survive the next few months?

Just like last year we'll be closing for a couple of weeks for Christmas/New Years. Why can't mail in votes be cut off some weeks prior to actual election day? Count those first. Early voting works great. You casually go in, take your time, vote as you like and it's input right away. They...
  2. Discussion What's your shop's typical day like in terms of shop efficiency?

We do duplicate cards in order to hold a place for install dates and also if multiple substrates are required for that job. So we might have the orig card for just rta and a duplicate for the print vinyl. Don't use job numbers - we file by business name or last name both in trello and our...
  3. Discussion What's your shop's typical day like in terms of shop efficiency?

Here's a snip of my trello board. Note the tabs for the other boards
  4. Discussion What's your shop's typical day like in terms of shop efficiency?

9 employees 1 Owner/Operator, 3 sales staff, 1.5 designers (I'm the 1), 1 print tech/IT, 1 accountant/sales, 2 productio/installers Monthly meetings - totally worthless but I don't mind the effort We use trello to track orders so first thing is to pull that up and see what's in the lineup and...
  5. Shop Organizer/production Programs

90% of our jobs are customized. 1 color, full color, logo/no logo etc. Single/sided or double, grommets, stakes, hardware, file provided or not, etc We have a price book as a guide but it's still a pia to quote from. And if we need to adjust those prices....well that'll take some time. The...
  6. Shop Organizer/production Programs

I began to watch the Cyrious youtube video "New Employee Orientation Session 1 Navigation, Exploring and User Options" Looks very overwhelming from a designer standpoint like way too much information. I like the flow and visual aspects of trello. We just hired a person who is very familiar with...
  7. Shop Organizer/production Programs

Update. We have moved from using the whiteboard (see image above) to trello (free). I happen to love trello for tracking the sign production steps but it does nothing for the sales order/invoicing side. We're still looking strongly at going to Cyrious but can't seem to find the right answers to...
  8. How close do you follow specs when bidding a sign package?

Though only slightly relevant, just thought it funny. We have received various city sign specs in pdf format. Includes a sample layout, includes all the color codes, as well as, the typography and letter heights. Trouble is they did not use the actual colors or fonts in the pdf file so as I try...
  9. Has to be an easier way??

  10. No "convert fonts" options when doing a save as pdf?

We are not just a "print service provider". I happen to know this client designs her own signs and should know better than to send low res png files. If we print just like the client sends we're sure to lose clients as they see the bad results. 99% of files we receive are not even close to the...
  11. No "convert fonts" options when doing a save as pdf?

Opened problematic file in Acrobat Pro 9. Went Advanced/Print Production/Flattener Preview. Checked "Convert All Text to Outlines", hit apply then saved. Imported that pdf and all the text was good but it took the one raster image (transparent png) that was in the layout flattened it and...
  12. No "convert fonts" options when doing a save as pdf?

We have Acrobat Pro only for viewing pdf's. I cannot tell what size the pdf nor can I make mods such as moving things around. imo it is most certainly the job of the designer to make the file as "universal" as possible if they don't want extra fees tacked on. The best way to do that is convert...
  13. No "convert fonts" options when doing a save as pdf?

An action or script would be ideal. I use a lot of macros in corel for things like this. Usually if I just can't quite get the pdf correctly I'll open in photoshop, flatten all then save as a tiff. I also thought that if you do a "place" in illustrator that you'd have the option to convert the...
  14. No "convert fonts" options when doing a save as pdf?

I'm not a frequent user of illustrator but as we all know a good sign shop must have it, as well as, several other helpful software. I thought with the latest and greatest version of illustrator that an option to convert fonts on pdf output was added. Do you really have to do it manually? Don't...
  15. Discussion Not exactly logo......................................

Do it the way he wants and have him sign a waiver. If corporate sees it and gripes it'll be on him and he'll have to re-order. p.s. Happened to us. And just for giggles here are the colors. Why no pantones is beyond me.
  16. Need Help corel 6 output rgb colors

Seriously doubt that the text was caused by the "Compress text and line art" option As for the image being "chopped". That usually happens when saving a large raster to pdf. Sometimes it can be fixed by selecting all those bitmaps and do a "create bitmap" to "flatten" it.
  17. Need Help corel 6 output rgb colors

Not sure what relevance that is anyway since fonts are being converted. I could probably uncheck that and never notice any difference. My thought was that it reduced the file size but never really tested that theory.

  19. Suggestions Want to automate our manual sheet layouts somehow

How many are you talking about? You could set up macros to quickly import those without searching for them then give each their own unique icon either placed on your workspace or as a separate toolbar. I have a plethora of macros to make quick work of all kinds of scenarios. -Crop marks, cut...
  20. Trying to get into the biz

Did you fail science class? The sun is the same on a vertical surface (box truck) as it is on a horizontal surface (hood)? Wasn't my decision. I don't own the business. We do use "cast on ANYTHING with wheels." As well as many other outdoor signage. There is, however, a lesser expensive cast...
