Hi Fatcat
Yes the only reason why I haven't upgrade was due to the cost and the attitude from Wasatch.
I have two other Signlab 9.1 RIPs but I feel Wasatch is nicer to use and tends to print closer to what you would expect with little or no adjusting profiles.
Signlab is so far of the mark as...
My VJ 1604 is running firmware 1.19 and is using bulk inks and replaceable smart cards.
I even have a device to write my own smart cards. Have a look here http://www.mutohsmartcards.com/
I know that some of the earlier firmware versions can bypass the smart cards but you are correct saying the...
So what's the benefits of latex other than you have to change heads more often and the smell?
Mind you their is very little smell of our eco solvent machine and really the only noticeable smell is when printing 3Ms IJ180 of which I can confirm I am addicted too!
Actually I reckon their is more...
Yesterday afternoon I set of 3 separate prints and lastly a layout print of 3 files from Wasatch to our Valuejet 1604 and left it merrily printing away.
I checked it to confirm colours and quality during which time I set up a few other jobs from my next print run.
Well everything was fine...
I don't understand?!?
I thought this was the main reason of buying a latex printer, that it was dry and ready to laminate almost straight from the machine!
I have had de-lamination issues with Arlon 6000xrp on a solvent machine but never with 3Ms IJ180.

Did you replace the head cable when installing the new head?
I have heard also that the Mutoh head cables are a much better item than after market ones.
I have had a water based head on my my 1604 but it was not new and blocked more than the one it replaced.

Does the printer communicate/print from a RIP programme correctly?
If it does why do you want to update the firmware??
Every problem that I had with my 1604 that was supposed to be remedied with the latest firmware did not work.
Personally the firmware updates are only used by the manufacturers...
The Rockhopper extreme uses DX4 heads and has 4off them if I remember.
If you know the machine it might be worth the expense of new heads and data cables.
But if the machine is unknown and bought as it is at the moment you may find it will cost thousands to get running and it may be wiser move...
Obviously your heads are past reclaiming.
It's time to buy new ones.
Personally I think ultrasonic cleaning etc. is a waste of time once you have lost more than 10% of your nozzles.
Unless caught early on and the head has not had tens of thousands of hours of use you may gain something.
But in...
Sorry I thought it was the later rockhopper with the dx4 heads.
Your printer is real old school.
Still looks like a head cable issue or maybe a faulty head board.

Did you cross the cables over as this can destroy a head?
Is it just that head that is doing this?
Can you swap the cables over to check the head is working?
It could be a dead head.

Why don't you tell us what is up and maybe we could guide you on repairing it yourself?
This will save $$$$ on a tech.
Also this site is crammed full of info and fixes for the JV3

This thread is scary but this is happening a lot now.
Only thing is to counteract with either an additional 5-10% on the job or come up with outrageous terms also.
I haven't come across anyone wanting an annual fee for their business.
The only thing is if I had to pay a business an annual fee I...
