  1. printing inaccurate lengths (160sp)

i'll look into that. i've just dialed in my feed comp and left it for more than a year. and i've never done a baseline (i'll be learning something new today). but for intermittent length differences... that's so odd. if a printer doesn't "know" what an inch is, it seems it would just be...
  2. printing inaccurate lengths (160sp)

i do a lot of low pass (1, 2, and 4 pass printing) on metal. lately i've had wild swings in the print's length. i usually blame this on the metal slipping in the machine. but i didn't have this issue in the past. today i printed four large blueprints (on 40lb white butcher paper. very...
  3. Test print

missing centers to test prints can be a clogged head manifold. do the missing lines move around? or is it the same pattern always?
  4. Debt free or new machines??

maybe it should be some kind of usage threshold. break down the amount of hours per day or week that the printer runs. divide that by the amount of the payment. so that you have direct hour per dollar for cost of ownership. new or not, the machine payment should be a monthly write off, not...
  5. Debt free or new machines??

i think having this signs101 community has made "new" machinery less important because we can keep old machinery running like new.
  6. Mimaki Head error 007

you have the service manual right?
  7. Rigid Clear Material

depending on how you're set up, you could get some .040 or .040 PETG, spray it with some cab lacquer (i use sherwin williams sherwood cabacrylic). PETG is so cheap, it's almost free. of course you could use thin polycarb as well, but why foot the cost when you don't need to. PETG doesn't cut...
  8. Compositing with 3ds Max

thanks. unfortunately i think three these proposals were dead ends for one reason or another. i get about 50% of the projects which is enough. nemours is a spring project. so who know, i may be batting "0"?
  9. Compositing with 3ds Max

i've been doing what i call "virtual installs" for years. in rhino, i've been building the part then exporting to a 3d object in photoshop to drop the object on to a photo. but i find photoshops 3d tools for rotating etc very aggravating. i can i avoid rhino all together and fake the 3d in...
  10. Need Layout critique "Wall of Fame" for Nursing home

iiiiiiit's pretty bad. is it vinyl? or print? work with massive transparent blocks, do smaller sizes piercing the bigger ones behind. you need mass and interlocking ideas. think of the whole mass of words as a vignette. alternate between translucent and opaque, etc.
  11. Mimaki Head error 007

that's a great observation. i've noticed a kind of "pillowing" at those connections in the dx4. i for some reason never throw away an error 07 head. possibly some kind of odd wishful thinking? i'm going to take some time in the next weeks to see just how "dead" these heads are.
  12. may have fried jv3 firewire board? HELP!

...@rucksman not sure about what the question is.
  13. need suggestion for optically clear window film!

i don't own a laminator (at least a good one). i have a giant broken walco, and another old walco 48" premasker. we've always avoided laminating because the customers hear"laminate" and run off. not that wet applying an optically clear window film is better. i am just being forced to...
  14. need suggestion for optically clear window film!

i've never clear face mount. i've always epoxied my substrates together. but it's not mounting film that i need. i want to print the image on a window film and apply it to the acrylic.
  15. need suggestion for optically clear window film!

i am in a pickle. no time. huge project. don't trust my current materials and techniques for the miracle that has to happen in the next five days. i have a 211 x 38 diptych to do. two layers. metal on the back, acrylic floated slightly larger about 1.5" over it with a second image mounted...
  16. Mimaki Head error 007

the lifespan of a jv3 is 1000 years. just like a car. it's a machine. the technical prowess may be five years.??? the heads should have been soaking this whole time. if there is ink in the printer, you are in trouble. the second that thing is inked you are in maintenance mode. the pomps...
  17. FB-950 demo on ebay

...might be a great buy for someone in the market. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Scitex-FB-950-Flat-Bed-12-color-Wide-Format-98-Printer-100-COMPLETE-/260904344757?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cbf1c5cb5
  18. how does one clean the encoder sensor?

i blazed mine with air but that didn't work... taking it on and off what really easy. wish everything was that easy. it was so nice to see the printer tracking perfectly. i think it's been off by a few millimeters over an 8' length for the last few months. i just kept figuring it was user...
  19. Standoffs and hanging a 4'x8' sign

on stand offs, that thing is going to freak out with thermal expansion and contraction. do not put it on a wall that the sun can hit it. also, or just a few bucks more i'd at least put a cheap backer with it. but don't attach the backer, just seal it at the top so it will shed water away from...
  20. Mimaki jv3 printing issue

yeah. do the test draw and look to see if the yellow pattern seems out of position and get back with what you see.
