Adobe has only 32 Bit XP on their "System Requirements". The only 64 Bit support they show is for Vista. Although, this doesn't mean that it won't work, only that it won't be supported.

Switch it out with a mouse at a different workstation. If it is a problem at the other system too, maybe it is just time for a new mouse? BTW, anything interfering with the light on the underside of the mouse? Lint, dust, etc?

how about unplugging it from the computer (if it is usb) and then plug it back into a different USB port. The OS will recognize it as new hardware and will "install" it again. This sometimes fixes little "quirks".

Are you running 8.5? This seems to be a popular theme with 8.5 v1. I have heard that 8.5 v2 may be a bit more stable. An update may fix the issue.
