  1. On Site Installs

Municipal cars and emergency vehicles I always letter at the facility. I do that simply for convenience of the department - they don't have to arrange two officers to drop off the vehicle to and from. Contractors I do here at the shop unless they absolutely can't do it, then I charge for the trip.
  2. Web Design Gone Horribly Wrong!

Look at it (if possible) this way: that page supposedly has over a million times according to the counter, probably from threads just like this. Isn't that one way to drive traffic to your site, even if it is horrid?
  3. This customer introduced himself as...

I've got a couple of those (and, I tend to be one with my mechanic...). I keep on working while they chat away. Doesn't really bother me; the guys that don't buy regularly have referred customers by the "oh, I didn't know you could do that!" visitation.
  4. Panel Saw

Did the exact same thing - I got tired of looking around the guard all the time. I have the 'jr' model, but it still has handled everything I've thrown at it.
  5. Your opinion on fresh auto paint

Yep, 24 hours minimum if the car has been in a bake booth, otherwise at least a week if the customer doesn't want to see any shadow images should the vinyl need to be taken back off.
  6. How do you store your vinyls...

Free-standing rack on wheels that stores the rolls horizontally. But that was my choice due to space limitations; there are racks available that store vertically as well. Easy enough to weld up something, too!
  7. How to calculate material and time used to get exact cost?

When you design your projects, don't you already know how big it will be? Calculating material usage comes with the territory and experience. As you build your projects, you should be keeping a table on how much material was used, how much was wasted and how much time it took. If you aren't...
  8. Tall curved flag banner?

  9. Printer of the future

Right. Anyone remember or still have a thermal fax? Where you can't read the fax after a couple of months sitting in a file? So this printer is good for ...what? Inter-office memos?
  10. oh brother

Read the fine print... Order online today, choose your Outdoor Banner length (3-8 metres), design it with just a few mouse clicks, and within hours it's being made in our Shanghai factory I guess that price doesn't include shipping across the ocean, huh? And I love their guarantee...
  11. This will make you quit using Illustrator....

Makes me wonder, though... the second person in the '10steps' link - Takashi - his page says "RealTrace" by Illustrator. Not being familiar with all the Adobe products, isn't that simply taking a photo and applying the program to trace it? And if so, what really applicable technical skill is...
  12. Acrylic urethane catalized paint

Industry standard automotive paint. It's either one stage or two stage, depending if there is a clear coat, but for a box truck it'll probably be single stage. You can put graphics on it the next day if they have a booth that bakes the paint layer. If they don't I'd have them wait at least a...
  13. Problems with decals on vehicle windows

Hadn't heard the Rain-X thing before, but then i don't use car washes, either. Try prepping the window with an acetone wash (careful with the car finish), wipe a couple times with new rags each time and follow it up with alcohol. And I think I read somewhere that new auto glass (2000 and up) was...
  14. Cutting aluminum on a router

Yep, too little info. Carbide will always outcut HSS, and if you're breaking them, you're running too fast. Are you running coolant or just air on the bit? I used to run an old Vytek with a 3hp spindle; .080 aluminum backers I'd run all day at a conservative speed ± 1.25 i.p.s. at 15000 rpm. I'd...
  15. Enroute 4 Pro - What's it worth?

Usually about half, if you have the dongle key and all the documentation.
  16. Window Perf install with toolbox.

That's all you can do short of asking the owner to move the box. Charge extra next time for 'obstacles of application'.
  17. reason # 43 to call.

Ouch... good thing it was caught. And yes, even though lines are 'marked' it's still possible to hit 'em. Marking only gives approximate locations, it's the digging part you have to be careful with. If I'm ever in doubt, I hand dig slowly - never with a power auger!
  18. Advice on "FOR SALE" sign?

The couple that I've done around here, I've always highlighted the 'prime commercial property' with the square footage, since people looking for that type of property are interested in the size. Then, in decreasing order, acreage, phone, price and description. If someone's interested, they're...
  19. Paint Effect

I'm not entirely sure that's a Photoshop effect. Lots can be done with strobes and a can of paint - the guy could easily be shopped into the photo, as the guy slinging the paint might not be in the right position.
