  1. scratch disc

Raid 0 (at least two drives) scratch disks work best. The more drives, the faster it will go. PS uses scratch (kinda like a pagefile) when it runs out of usable RAM. NEVER use a partition, use a decicated drive (or RAID Array). It can dramatically improve PS performace if used correctly.
  2. Router...hub...or switch??

Buying a higher grade switch is a wise investent in my opinion. That siad, I have seen many a large format printer run flawlessly on the lesser grade switches and router without a hickup. I personally would rather spend a couple hundred bucks on a switch than loose a couple hundred in lost...
  3. Drive Mirroring?

I have shipped a few Intel models. They were a little more pricey, but they did the job well. RAID 10 (four 500GB drives), so I actaully got 1TB of space, but if a drive goes down, you can hot swap it and you are never down. You can also configure separate users and passwords if you so choose.
  4. Drive Mirroring?

Just my two cents.... but I would consider a NAS device. It sits on your network and several users can share and store files on it. It can be setup with several RAID flavors to protect your data against drive failure and be backup up from your computer. I don't know if this is EXACTLY what...
  5. DELL.....what a joke....

Man, I have to say that is about par for the course. The funny thing is, I swear that every Dell tech support guy is named "Johnny".
  6. RAM addition...

Try to keep the RAM sticks identical in brand, model#, and size. I would just replace the 3 "odd" sticks you have with matching pairs of two (or four) 1GB sticks. Your motherboard manufacturer will give you exact DDR population rules, but this is a pretty standard practice.
  7. The "Wrap Daddy" Computer

Raid There are disadvantages to RAID. Either mirrored, striped, or both. My best advice (to any computer user) is BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP. There are many high-capacity external drives, NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices, or even the Microsft Home Server that make backing up easier...
  8. The "Wrap Daddy" Computer

Yeah, that NEVER hurts! Gotta love RAID !!!
  9. The "Wrap Daddy" Computer

Flexi Ripping.... You're right. Good hardware will only get you so far with ripping in Flexi. It is interesting. While at the show in Atlantic City a couple of months ago, we were asked to run a new version of Flexi (actually it's silghtly less capable counterpart, Photoprint) on our RIP...
  10. The "Wrap Daddy" Computer

Ripping times Ripping is a processor intensive activity. I do recommend spitting the design and ripping tasks up on different computers (if at all possible). It is far more efficient. If you don't split them, designing in going to be a slug while you are ripping. Designing on your current...

    Point taken cpknut.
  12. The "Wrap Daddy" Computer

I realize that I may have been defensive. I agree. I just have to ask you if someone walked into your shop and told you that you were doing it all wrong and charging too much for it as well, how would you react. It was a knee-jerk and there was probably a little a little over-reaction...
  13. The "Wrap Daddy" Computer

Thanks iSign. I spent some time (3 years) on Oahu while in the Army. You are on a different island, right? I am not quite haole, but hapa. I just visited for a week or so in November. What a wonderful place to live (although I do remember missing the mainland after a while).

John, that is fair. I will agree to disagree. The things that we are arguing about in here are most likely not fully understood anyhow. You seem to be a very intelligent guy. Thanks for the stimulating banter.

I really like Jay. He and I went to Orlando together last year and he took me fishing. I had the time of my life. I am a fly-fisherman, but have never had a fishing experience like that. I was all cut and bruised and happy as can be.

yep... they are clovertown. That is a big swing from web hosting to sign shop. I t is funny, I dream of owning a wrap shop. It sounds like so much fun! I get to build these computers everyday and feel the speed, but have nothing to use them for! I find myself playing in Photoshop...
  18. 64 bit ? Question about software

Photoshop itself can take advantage of 64 Bit in a great many cases. Just do your homework before building your computer. Photoshop can use a max of 3GB of ram all by itself. The additional RAM is helpful in other ways. It gives the OS enough RAM so that you it doesn't start cutting into the...
  19. Ram- How much can I add?

I sencond that. Many people believe that anything over 2GB in 32 bit windows is useless. I disagree whole-heartedly. eforer is correct. You can even use the 3gb Switch in your boot.ini file to allow windows to only use 1gb and leave 3GB for you applications. The swithc does come at a slight...

Clovers? I actually took a design and rip station to a wrap shop out there in Queen Creek, J&S Prosigns. Have you heard of it? That is the only time I have been out that far! It is like traveling to another state!
