what a mess. try a fishing line behind the magnet. I've had people (taxi cabs) glue magnets on. If you heat it up, you can start to pull it off in pieces. Then I use rapid remover and a plastic scraper to get it clean. BUT its not going to be nice or easy to do.

your other option is to use two sheets of 1/2" and stud mount them with nuts. Then I'd probably route the center of a 3rd 1/2" PVC sheet, leaving a 1 or 2" border and sandwich the three sheets together. Good luck.

I'd probably plot a split stencil using paint mask or whatever cheap vinyl you have laying around. I'd rather do it that way than to have to manually cut out the spaces on a paper pattern.

We do stuff like this all day long with cut vinyl. Just use cast and post-heat the recesses.

If your printer isn't big enough to print 60" across, I'd recommend subbing it out.

i've left it unhemmed. I've also hemmed with VHB / banner tape. I wasn't happy with how it looked sewn.

If they have the vinyl ones, I'd think a vinyl decal would work just fine. Try different materials and see which sticks best.
