Yes they seem to have gotten slower, but I didn't dig into the specs too far. Since we're on the subject of speed. I wonder if anyone has an EJ-640 with the DG series ink. Haven't heard a peep from anyone on the board.
What about ultrasonic welders? The sub I use for large work has one. I haven't had any issues with the finished product. No clue what the brand name is though.
Gotta be the linked files and network slowing things down. Either that or something is running in the background sapping resources. Our nearly 10 year old XP based system, which we still use from time to time takes only minutes to chew through a 100+ meg file.
You may want to know this before dismissing someone offering help. When I first called Imprintables they were nothing but helpful and sent a ton of samples.
As others have said there is no way around the "plasticky" feel. But it doesn't matter what you like, it is up to your clients to decide. They may think its great. Mine do.;)
How are you going to pitch it without insulting the owner of said shabby signs? Businesses like that are happy with what they have and more importantly what was paid.
I agree with 2CT and 2B. I use a Wagner 705 power steamer. IIRC the reservoir holds 2 gallons. Less than 50 bucks at Menards. I know there are pro models out there, but this works and is cheap to replace.
Somebody else to do the work.:p
I aspire to be like my uncle. Surrounded himself with great people that cared about doing stellar work. He got to the point with his auto body shop that the only job left for him was to make coffee for the morning meeting. He lived well.
I rarely go to car lots. If I do its on a Sunday as they are closed. At any rate Google is your friend. Super easy to get profile pics and specs from Ford, GM etc...
Profile pic + wheelbase then scale it up in Ai. Done
Before you buy a printer sub everything out and see if you can really afford a printer and software to run it.

Like I've said many times before. If there is a Roland, HP, Mimaki etc... dealer just down the block from your shop, buy that brand of printer. All printers break and usually...
