Okay so I whipped out a quickie layout, using the basic principles on "Mastering Layout".... then I jacked the image up with a simulated bad brush job.
Painting is a skill that comes with practice. A decent design can still work, even if the production is executed poorly.
If this was a printed sign or vinyl, this would be a poor layout and there would probably be a general consensus that it is.
The poster said they have graphic design, animation and illustration experience.. enough to question the design solution they came up with. It's a poor layout or logo or...
Hopefully you are not getting defensive, the comments are made to improve your work. You did not introduce yourself so we have no idea who you are and what experience you have. You sound like you have work that exceeds this.
We are only critiquing this sign work, not you.
It helps to know...
Have you done much practice with a brush with one shot and various reducers before doing this sign" or you jumped right in?
As far as it being better than before or you having superior skills, it's not showing through in this design and execution. But it's great to see someone picking up a...
How Big?
I think I have a drawing floating around of the standard Starbuck sign.
If I remember correctly on the drawing, they rout out a ring and weld a return to it and screw that into a reinforced .063 or maybe even .080 aluminum radius cabinet, I think they were around 10" deep.
Is that your design?
Is that a layout or a logo?
What was your process on getting the lettering on (pounce pattern? Stencil?, stabilo and started painting? projector)
I don't know what the old man is looking at but that layout has some issues.
It looks like you need more practice with brush...

I would try to look at icons as enhancing the copy. Pictograms are added to signs to help enhance the message, then for people who can't read or can't read english to navigate through a system. They are the lowest form of sign communication.
Same with print and website iconography. You want to...
Kinda feel the same way as Rep does...
One thing is I would design pictograms for your buttons that are consistent an simple. They are all over the place making the "look" a little disconnected.

I find most issues are user error, your issue is different and dumping the preferences was the only way. This was caused by hitting a shortcut (SHIFT+COMMAND+'). It usually happens to me when I accidently hit the wrong key to move something forward of back (ARRANGE) (SHIFT+OPTION+])
Gonna wait and see how it runs on XP, still waiting for a few friends to tell me how Windows 7 is working on their Macs with Fusion... THEN I have an Adobe Premium Suite Upgrade and CadTools upgrade in a few months. I may need more work...

If there are funky tricks to the vector you are trying to drop shadow or some oddity in the graphic, you might want to...
---Copy the image you want drop shadowed.
---Then turn the selected image a color with no tricks (I usually use black)
---Apply drop shadow (should work)
--- delete the...
It's best to pull the permit for signs because there are certain requirements that are usually requested for submittal. A sign company usually has to hold the clients hand way too much during the process. Then there is the occasional code note that you might miss making the trip to the...
