  1. Advice wanted on creating design portfolio

I'm thinking you are looking to make a capabilities/portfolio brochure on CD? Showing images on a .pdf may land the occasional small business job, some higher end clients want to know your experience, qualifications and process. I would first write the copy for- Introduction Services...
  2. Some recent design work...

    Nice mix of work...
  3. Bushings for Channel Letters

I think Westcoast is correct in this case, "DON'T DO THE WORK" You already admitted to bidding of another sign shops drawings... many here on this site look at that as stealing. Miguelon is in Texas, I believe all he needs is a certified electrician on his payroll and he can do electrical...
  4. Industrial Icons

On some of the pictograms, you can get a few on the AIGA site and the GAG site. But nowhere close to all the items you need on that image.
  5. Industrial Icons

I beg to differ, if you do a search for ANSI and ISO on that Ultimate Symbol site, the majority of symbols are there. Are you looking for the actual layouts? You can buy specialized layout software, order the ANSI, OSHA, or ISO standard books for 5 times the price and may not be vector, invest...
  6. Industrial Icons

Some of those signs may be non-compliant for California and a few look over-compliant. It might be good to know the Title 24 Buiding Code, Title 19 Fire Code, and if this is a hospital OSHPD or a Transportation Hub, whatever guidelines that are in force for them. You can try here for some...
  7. CD jacket design

That looks better, but what about the band's name? The TV idea sorta reminds me of this... (thats a good thing in my book) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BggXhzUhZ94
  8. CD jacket design

The one on the right may be the least distracted on, but there are issues with the logo. Mostly, hard to read, to complicated, there is probably a story to the image, but it's too ambiguous to understand it, and that problematic message overwhelms the logo.
  9. CD jacket design

Your band logo is overpowering every layout. The layouts are nice, the logo style is to "decorative". Either redo the logo, don't use it, or use it on the inside of the CD.
  10. Mural Museum Logo

    :notworthy:Very nice...:notworthy:
  11. New Logo Crit

What I would do is collect exhibit logos, go to the VMS+D site, maybe http://www.exhibitoronline.com/ and look at logos in the same field. Why work that hard having something plop out when other designers have done some of the work already. Once you collect some research and inspiration, then...
  12. New Logo Crit

Awkward drop shadow/outlines, might be too thick, the other outline is too thin when by the thick outlined type. Is that image in the background a cheap pop-up display and podium? The connecting "I" is not adding to the logo, it's usually a solution when ideas are running low... How much...
  13. You gotta have trust

I think I used to work for that guy...
  14. Exposed Neon C/L Mounted to Dimensional Back Panel

Yeah, it's what I thought... I hate working on some else's fuzzy drawings. So many variables that you have to double check. Like I mentioned before I would redraw it to see if it's workable, and present it rendered dimensionally. Gotta be careful, most sign shops get upset when bidding on...
  15. Exposed Neon C/L Mounted to Dimensional Back Panel

Hey, I was going to do that... :beer
  16. Exposed Neon C/L Mounted to Dimensional Back Panel

The reason I mention the old sign was a lot of time was wasted on finding a flex solution where a rout out solution was probably the only economical way of doing it. By redrawing it, and seeing the path of the neon, you will see if neon will fit in the letters and graphic elements, it's looking...
  17. Exposed Neon C/L Mounted to Dimensional Back Panel

Is this your design or is someone else doing this? Seems to me he should ask about thicknesses before telling you what they are. The front letters may be 4-5" thick (issues I see is, will the neon fit on some of those strokes?), (as mentioned) the backer can act as a wireway 4-5" thick. I...
  18. Exposed Neon C/L Mounted to Dimensional Back Panel

Is this the same "cabinet" that you brought up a few weeks ago? http://www.signs101.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=47448&d=1264697372
  19. thoughts on employee production

I agree that designers are different because they are generally supplying the artwork needed to keep everyone busy. A designer dedicated to design and computer production should be able to keep 5-10 people busy. A designer with a computer production designer can keep 20-30 people busy at an...
  20. Bending acrylic?

Another option, if it needs to be tight is: --12" x 17" acrylic clear panel face. --paint (or vinyl) a 5/8" header and footer (second surface) --use a little less than 1/2" vhb or foam tape to create a cavity --attach it to a 12 x 17" backer. Slip 11 x 17 inset in place. You can use a post-it...
