  1. Now much extra material is needed???

When I have stuff printed locally, I ask them not to trim the prints down. On more than one occasion, they have over trimmed my prints! If it is really important, I add extra space to the margin (23" wide print, I put a 24" box around the entire thing). This may solve your problem. Make a...
  2. large HDU install questions

You might want to consider adhering a rigid back on the HDU... Either MDO or polymetal, depending on the size of the signs.
  3. Local competitor with WAY LOW pricing

These are new customers, shopping around for the best deal... Or maybe they just didn't feel comfortable with the other companies, so they kept looking. It may not be about price. I have no idea, all I know is that this is the third time I've physically seen a quote from the same shop that is...
  4. Local competitor with WAY LOW pricing

Gotcha. Of course, I think everyone throws little things in here and there. This instance (as with everything else I've seen from this shop) was the whole she-bang. There is literally no place to make money on the job. I think we mis-understood each other.
  5. Local competitor with WAY LOW pricing

We should all just start subbing jobs out to these people. If they are willing to retail stuff for half of what we will do it for, why not? We make all the profit by doing office work, they struggle to get the work done and make no money. Win / Win?
  6. Local competitor with WAY LOW pricing

Your statement makes little to no sense. Every time you turn the key in the ignition, it costs more than having the vehicle sit in the lot. Every time you use your equipment, you are nicking away at its value. This may be a small amount in the grand scheme of things, but why in the world do put...
  7. Local competitor with WAY LOW pricing

TRUE THAT! Seriously, I'm pretty sure that shop has some new owners... And somehow we've gotten some new clients.
  8. Local competitor with WAY LOW pricing

That's about where we are, too.
  9. Local competitor with WAY LOW pricing

Yeah, he quoted acrylic, but we would use polycarb, and they are flat faces. So you own a bucket truck... how much does it cost to start it up and drive it 10 miles each way? Even if you own the truck outright, its costs money to maintain, fuel up, insure. Its as if you are paying for the...
  10. Local competitor with WAY LOW pricing

SOoooo. For the third time in as many months, I've seen a quote from a franchise shop a few miles away from us. Their pricing is insanely low. I'm talking $450 for two new 3x5 acrylic faces INSTALLED, 18 feet up! The cost on the acrylic alone (forget about waste, I'll just go with the sqft...
  11. Do you use QR codes?

We put a QR code on our van, if for no other reason than we look like we are following current technological trends. We've done a bunch for our clients, and honestly you can easily upsell... Charge them $20-$50 for a code on their signs. It only takes a minute to use a code generator.
  12. finding better art

I'm kinda an jerk that way... Before I send my proofs, I convert them to bitmap. On VERY rare occasion will I send a vector file to a client. I do this mostly so they can't go to another sign company with my fantastic files. Also, if someone sends me crap, and I vectorize it, there is no f'ing...
  13. Attention Graphtec owners

Is this while its running, or only when setting it up? While its running, do you advance the vinyl manually? We load up the plotter, unroll the vinyl (with the roll on rollers) to at least the length of the cut file, and then start the job.
  14. Thanks Natalie! (aka fresh)

Thank you!! I hope you found what you were looking for... I still can't believe they retracted my account!
  15. Help with pricing for 4'x6' Illuminated Sign Cabinet, install only.

We would probably charge $500... we have learned that nothing is ever as easy as it appears. Also, it takes time to prep, you have to make sure you have all of your fasteners (and then run to the store to get something different because of the 8 options in your bucket, none of them will actually...
  16. Best material for Sponsor signs?

we just replaced coroplast faces on a sandwich board we did 6 years ago. Granted, they probably should have been replaced about 3 years ago, but c'est la vie. I'm pretty sure they will last more than two years, particularly if you laminate them 100% with printed graphics... OR just order...
  17. Anyone know what "J track" is?

I was just going to suggest looking there! Nice work :)
  18. pricing custom guest parking signs

Okay, I still have no idea if you used real 23K SignGold, which costs around $17 a square foot. I assume you used some other specialty vinyl, but I have no idea how much it might have cost, so I really can't add to the conversation.
  19. Real Estate L Sign/Post w/Rider

We get them from Dee Signs, but you have to order them in sets of 3 http://www.deesign.com/realestatesigns/SignDisplay/SignDetails.cfm
