You are going to pay either way .... Tech or materials is going to cost you. I would go with the Tech ... As to not damaging anything yourself and if god forbid somethign was damaged or defective. You have the tech there and i am assuming the waranty would be easyer to apply.
Way back when i went from using Gerber Graphics Advantage (at my employers) to FlexiSign (my own software) it was very hard to stop <<<<using <<<<the <<<< arrow<s <<<<in <<<<c<omposer <<<<to <<<<adjust <<<<the <<<<kerning <<<<manually. But it did make a huge difference! :peace!:
I use allot of MDO. I hate the pre-painted or pre-primed boards. I prefer painting myself. I always do a coat of latex on the backsides just to keep them looking their best for years to come.
I do not share your opinion Bob. I was taught by the Mike Steven's book and a whole mess of alcoholic sign painters (some recovering and some acting). And we always adjusted visually. You seem to be following a strict typesetting mentality that is limited with rectangle plates.

Cool video Jill .. You can even see a sign installer going up a ladder to service a Shell sign at the 30 sec mark. I guess sign people would be the only ones noticing that. lol
A couple of things i would try is:
- Create a new Illustrator window ... Place the file in and have the "link" checkbox unchecked.
- Last resort for me is to open it in Photoshop at a high resolution and save a .jpeg of it.
