I would recommend backing off the heat settings as well with banner material specifically the cheaper or thinner banners. Experiment using the lowest heat you can while still getting a good print.
Just installed some with wire standoffs...standard item from Gemini attached picture shows how these work.
buy all the wires long enough to stand off the building...cut the ones that hit the ridges
we use a pair of duckbill vise grips and some scrap coroplast. I would be afraid you could break a face with regular or needle nose vice grips ....if still no go then can you push from other end or remove from the top or bottom?
Is your plotter showing up in the Plot Manager?
If it is running on USB to the computer or through a Comm port

The banner tape will be an embarrassing call back by the customer - then they will not trust you that the "new tape" will hold better than the old.
I tried this with some small 1" letters on a painted sheet rock wall....not good
Printing this stuff on the Mutoh's we pop out a roller on each end so the rollers don't get close to the edges of the material and don't use the material guides. When cutting don't print anywhere close to the max width so your rollers on the plotter can be set inside the edge.
