  1. Mounting 4x8 to block wall

If you have to use it and cant frame it, make oversized holes in the acylic and then washers on top and dont tighten all the way - hardly the right way to go but if you have to this will keep it from binding up WHEN it expands in the sun. Use another material through, this will not last.
  2. Sign Cabinets

+1 excellart you can get a knock down kit or completely finished from them. I use LED's A LOT but have to disagree on using them for a cab unless you can justify the added expense for some reason. I do use them when a cabinet is installed in a spot that makes bulb changes difficult or a shallow...
  3. Need suggestions on sign box suppliers

I have a project in with them right now and so far they have been great to work with. I have heard good things about them.
  4. need info & opinions

Its actually not normal for a sign to leak - the weep holes are there mostly for condensation and unexpected leaks. A leak like yours will make a lot of condensation inside the cab and the wiring will be trash in no time.
  5. need info & opinions

Looks like they routed the letters with a ledge and then used a backer behind that without gluing the letters down which is not uncommon and allows the letters to float while being held in place. There should not be that much water in the sign though, it must be running down the inside face and...

  7. blackened steel?

I thought so to but thought Corten had a rust finish?
  8. blackened steel?

Looking for how this is done without rusting. Any ideas?
  9. paint dipping dimensional items?

I have done the old dip technique with tiny parts and if your paint is thin enough you should not have too much trouble. I use Matthews paint with a hardener so its pretty thin. I dip, place them onto a sheet of release liner and come back every 5 to 10 minutes and just push them around a little...
  10. Will this hold???????

6 is more than enough with the right anchors. I like the screw in type metal anchors which are rated at 75lb ea. I have hung many 1/2" thick panels that size with them.
  11. How to become UL listed

Depending on your jurisdiction it may be an overkill to get listed. We made and installed all sorts of internally lit signs with LEDs for years with no problem but had explain the code to a few city inspectors. Some cities want to see a UL label no matter what but the real reason we did it was...
  12. Retro open channel with bulbs

We just did one this year and used clear s14 11w bulbs but I think you can get them in various colors. I found Glantz to have the most variety for the sockets and bulbs. I know there are many LED options as well which will last longer but are REALLY expensive and dont have quite the same retro...
  13. How to become UL listed

Start with being very patient as its a painful process in dealing with all the processes. Its designed for large companies but if you can afford it then you can make it work. You can just go to the UL website and ask for a quote and they will walk you through what your looking for since there...
  14. Butt Seaming Aluminum/Steel - How Do Ya'?

That was my reply obviously and I guess I assumed that you would have some sort of frame on such a large panel. We did a 5' x 19' made from 5'x10' dibond panels this way recently and even if it was fully welded thicker aluminum a huge floppy panel would be really tough to move around. For that...
  15. Anyone know where to get 14ft Aluminum Signs?

don't try to fully weld 2 pieces together, you will end up with a warped mess. We Stitch weld those or tack em in place and use a filler strip on the back with Lords adhesive. Fill the seam with good body filler and paint away. You could do the same with any other aluminum composite panels.
  16. Clear Shield Liquid Laminate

I have not used it for a long time but used to a lot and had very good success with a pad applicator, you can get them at any hardware store.
  17. Painting Sintra

acrylics do work well, Ronan Aquacote sticks like mad. We spray Matthews though - clean with Matthews plastic prep, prime with Matthews single part plastic primer and topcoat - works great. Hardest part is dealing with the @#$@#$# static. I have a wire mesh panel I use and ground that which...
  18. Some Recent projects

Actually that's exactly what I did, pounce and paint. I can paint pictorials and illustrations but not so hot with the lettering so I stuck with the layout they wanted and painted away. Appreciate the feedback - did not see it that way before.
  19. Some Recent projects

Both are Mars Hill Churches, the monument is in Sammamish (where I go) and the interior sign is Bellevue. They have some really talented designers on staff and as volunteers - everything is very well done.
  20. Some Recent projects

Thought I would share a few recent jobs, lots of variety lately. This Dentistry sign replaced an older simple cabinet so we used the same foundation. The landscaping will cover that nasty concrete. One of these days I will remember to take the camera on installs - the cell phone pics suck...
