When we got our UV Flatbed Hybrid we made the decision to buy coro and rolls of banner in bulk. We also carry a minimum (10 4x8s) of a lot of substrates (foamboard, styrene, PVC) just to cover ourselves for rush orders. We have done a good job with our suppliers trying to get the best prices...

what JHill said! I was on vacation for a week and no one in the shop ran our mimaki all week, came back did 2 long head soaks and a couple cleanings and it was back in business.

For us its not so much downtime, it just quality. We have been having ink dropout issues since the beginning that causes terrible (at least in our opinions) banding. That just means we have to stop the machine and clean it way more often then we were lead to believe we would. We also cant run it...

Just an update since this was bumped to the top. We have had to have techs flown out twice now by CET. CET as a company is trying hard to get the machine running right, its just not up to what we were told it would be and at this point i don't think it ever will be.

We work with a local photographer. Any time a client has a specific want or need we cant find the right photo for we call him and have him and the client meet with us. Takes more time, and costs more money, but the final outcome makes for a happy client.

agree with JHill. We don't price per sq/ft anything. Every time we have it comes back to bite us in the *** because of some unforeseen circumstance. We quote every job for the job based off the same formula jHill posted. (estimated time X shop rate) + (material X markup)

Our best tool is by far our flatbed. Ive worked here for just over 4 years, and since i started i haven't had anything less than 3-400 hours of over time every year. We got the flatbed december of last year and i think i'm just over 80 hours of OT this year. Sales are up, lead times are down...

I would highly recommend a subscription to the wrap institute (www.wrapinstitute.com) Tons of helpful videos that will help you with these problems.

What school is actually teaching this? I would love to know... everyone locally who is a graphic designer that we have ever talked to doesn't have a clue how to set files up for wide format printing. Id love to know a school that actually does so we could pursue some of those students. :thumb:

Recently we have been using a low grade vinyl (oracal 3641) and cutting to shape for this sort of thing. We have our clients just fold the corners back a couple of inches and apply all 4 corners instead of the whole graphic. Because they are at low speed in the parade, we have never had any...
