  1. question

To borrow the parlance of today's youth, "YOLO."
  2. No More Gemini For Us

Your work around looks great though!
  3. Brand new UV bulb blew after one hour Mimaki JF-1631

I can't imagine that setting the curing to high would cause the bulb to blow. I'm not super familiar with Mimakis, but it wouldn't be any different than running the printer unidirectional with the single bulb set to high. Dumb question, but did you wear gloves while replacing the bulb? If you...
  4. Used Laminator Rollers...Does the rubber degrade or dry out?

We just replaced our rollers a year or two ago (our Seal is at least 10 years old), but that's because they had some nicks and cuts on the rollers. The laminator itself is pretty durable. It's only need repairs once (I believe, maybe twice) when we lost air pressure on one side. If it's been...
  5. Best panel saw blades?

That goes for anything! Take care of your tools and they'll take care of you. It's also not a bad thing to have a healthy amount of respect (and maybe a little fear, haha!) of your tools, since getting too comfortable is how you lose fingers.
  6. Best panel saw blades?

I have to agree with that. There's no information about the tooth style, how many teeth there are, the tooth angle, the kerf... If I'm paying top dollar for a saw blade, I want to know exactly what I'm getting. I think we paid around $140 for our Forrest blade for cutting acrylic. Which is...
  7. Best panel saw blades?

Forrest Manufacturing makes really good saw blades. They're a little pricey, but totally worth it. You can call them and talk to them about your application and they'll help you get the right blade too. Everyone I've talked to there is really knowledgeable. Festool also makes pretty good...
  8. Revamping my office.

Man, I wish our work areas were that organized. I can't get the bums around here to put something back in the same place twice, let alone organize.
  9. coldest winter ever!

You know what's worse than the cold? The humidity (or lack of). I'm about done getting shocked by every other object in the shop. And having to clean media five times because there are beard hairs stuck to everything.
  10. Getting My First SmartPhone

To each his own. While it's true that the headphone jack being removed from iPhones hasn't been officially confirmed, it's almost certainly going to happen. Apple has already licensed "Made-for-iPhone" lightning port headphones. Lightning port headphones already exist. Leasing isn't a scam. If...
  11. Getting My First SmartPhone

Oh, man. Not looking forward to that. I have a few years to go before my daughter hits that phase.
  12. Getting My First SmartPhone

Have you already gotten the iPhone? I hate them. I would rather get punched in the face than use an iPhone. The Samsung Galaxy S6 is pretty stellar. Unless you're just dead set on an iPhone, shop around a little. Also, Apple is discontinuing headphone jacks on iPhones and they're going to start...
  13. Vinyl peeling very slightly on cut/bleed **pic**

It's definitely worth waiting the extra day. Do a small sample run and check it out. It makes a huge difference. You might have to adjust your lead times a little, but the amount of headache it saves is worth it.
  14. coldest winter ever!

It's going to be around 47 degrees (about 8 C) today. After being around in the low teens for the past few days (-10 C). Life in Kentucky.
  15. Installing 1/4" PVC Letters

We generally use whatever cheap/free/scrap vinyl we have laying around, cut completely through to create a template, then just reverse weed and use the backing paper to create our template. It's by the far the fastest/easiest way, in my opinion.
  16. Colour calibration

Read Real World Color Management. It's an older book, but it's got a lot of really good information in there.
  17. Print on mirror

I always suspected that it would be okay to print on a mirror, but then I thought about ink curing in/on the heads and did some quick math and decided it would be far safer to pay for a piece of glass instead of replacing 14 heads at $3.5k a pop. Haha!
  18. Colour calibration

Are you using default profiles? You may need to actually create some profiles specifically for your printer and media. Mike Adams at Correct Color (CorrectColor on Signs101) is an amazing resource. His whole business is getting people set up to print accurate and consistent colors.
  19. Print on mirror

My only concern would be the UV light possibly reflecting off the mirror and curing ink on the bottom of the carriage/heads. Whether that would actually happen or not, I'm not sure. I wasn't brave enough to try when we had a customer request a direct print to mirror. Instead, we ended up...
  20. reviving print heads on UV flatbed

All the inks contain metal to some degree, but white ink contains more than the others. I believe it's titanium dioxide that's used in most (all?) white inks. The drawback is that it causes lots of clogging in print heads, which is why most printers have recirculation systems for white. If...
