  1. reviving print heads on UV flatbed

Are the nozzles clogged or are they completely out? There are a few general things you can try that should apply to just about any flatbed printer. Create a "capping station" and soak the heads in cleaning solution. Take a piece of Gatorfoam or some other rigid material, wrap in plastic wrap...
  2. free hand street signs

That's pretty impressive. I'm going to guess those guys have been doing that for a while.
  3. Laminating UV Inks?

Your absolute best bet would be to use a resin or epoxy, similar to the stuff that's used to coat bar tops. Without knowing the exact specs of the table, I'm not sure if it's even an option, but that stuff will protect anything underneath it. Once it hardens, that's it. They're usually two part...
  4. Off Topic: Should I Buy A Toyota Prius?

Yeah, Kias have definitely had a vast improvement in quality over the last couple of years. I'm not sure exactly WHEN they started to get better, maybe somewhere after 2010-2011? We have a friend with a 2005 Rio that hates theirs, but loves ours.
  5. Any opinions of which Flatbed to buy?

I've never had to the opportunity to work on one, but swissQprint has a pretty loyal following and I've never heard a single bad thing about the printers or the company. Which is saying a lot. We replaced our flatbed with a VUTEk hybrid and it's been pretty good so far. Some adjustments to...
  6. Off Topic: Should I Buy A Toyota Prius?

Have you looked at Kias? I drive a 2014 Rio and that thing is amazing. Surprising amount of room, amazing gas mileage (I've hit 44+ on road trips, around 25 city driving), and they have great warranties. I also made sure to get a model with no bells and whistles, so there's nothing to break. Haha!
  7. Laminating UV Inks?

Is there any reason you can't just second surface print to a piece of acrylic (or whatever) for the table top? Or am I missing something here? I believe MACtac has a laminate that's made specifically for use with UV printed vinyl, but I don't think it's going to give you any extra protection...
  8. Light Cyan and Light Magenta

Well, Mike did kind of answer that question: ink breaks. If you know where your printer switches from using magenta to light magenta or cyan to light cyan, you should be able to create a file that would print pure light magenta or pure light cyan.
  9. Light Cyan and Light Magenta

I like to read all your posts in Chris Pratt's voice and it makes them even better.
  10. Humidifier recommendations?

Well, it's that time of year again. Temperatures drop, humidity plummets, problems ensue. Right now we're having some serious static issues with pretty much every material we use. I've been burning up the generic humidifiers you get online at an alarming rate (two every few months). I'm now...
  11. I like crisp edges and I cannot lie, you other signers can't deny...

My guess is they're prototypes or tests and not for an actual client or job. A proof of concept or whatever you want to call it.
  12. Digital UV on Powdercoated Metal

Are you using 91% IPA or 70% IPA? I've found that using the 91% does a great job of cleaning and doesn't leave streaking. Doesn't even require any extra buffing for the most part. The only problem is that 91% and 99.9% IPA can work a little TOO well sometimes. Haha!
  13. Digital UV on Powdercoated Metal

We've printed to powder coated steel in the past, but we were doing exclusively white ink, which has slightly better adhesion in my experience. The ink COULD be scraped off with a little bit of work, but it printed and cured just fine. Unless someone was deliberately trying to scrape the ink...
  14. Print & Cut or Cut & Print ?

Production life. It's like nobody has ever heard of prepress. It'll be faster and you'll probably end up with less waste if you print first and then cut. Plus, you won't have to worry about taping off areas of your bed so you don't print on it or lose vacuum pressure. That's not always an...
  15. Programs to open eps files

If you don't have Illustrator, I believe you can use GIMP with GhostScript to open an EPS. Assuming you haven't already done so, you could just use the 30 day trial of Illustrator CC from Adobe.
  16. A online color test, how well can you see colors?

We did this a while back and I got a seven. One of the graphic designers got a zero. An account manager got a three. The owner got a 90. Haha!
  17. "Snow Dots"

It also helps to have some Letraset Tria markers or Prismacolors for touch ups.
  18. Mounting sign to painted wall in Hospital?

1/8" PVC? VHB will hold it. If you're really worried, put some silicone on there with the tape. It'll damage the wall if they ever want to remove it, but it'll stay up. Otherwise, if it doesn't have to be flush, I second the French cleat idea.
  19. Anyone Up On SSD Drives?

If you can't afford the bigger SSD drives, you can always get a smaller one for your OS and whatever programs you use frequently, then store all your data on a regular HDD.
  20. Scam Emails

New Stone Excellence Foods Services Inc. has ZERO web presence, which is generally a pretty good indicator that it's a scam. In this day and age EVERYBODY has a website or a social media presence.
