On the wallpaper I notice a slight rub off when the wallpaper is wet and I am wiping hard, but its nowhere near enough to smear the image.

If you must do this use Contec lint free polywipes or similar. The alcohol saturated fibers from paper towel lint will damage and clog printheads.

I have done this with a flag material and with a mesh banner (removable liner). The issue seems to be allowing the water to permeate the graphic and not allowing air bubbles to be trapped.
Funny, I just did this. I found some executive office desks with the glass i needed from a surplus office furniture store $100 each. The glass looks to be smoked and tempered 1/2" weighs 150 lbs per piece.
The glass works beautifully and cleans up so nice at the end of the day.
If the solvent is not draining then you could have a clog in the cap/pump/drain tubing. If you have the ability disassemble and check this. Sometimes it can be cleared with a syringe of acetone. (please wear eye protection).
