  1. graphtec cutting master question

I believe the feature you're talking about in Illustrator is called Live Trace. Googling that should help you find tutorials.
  2. Any problems with Avery Etchmark?

I have looked at everything except the 3M films (priced too high for what I do). The Oracal offerings just are ugly, IMO. The MacTac Glass Decor 700 Dusted looks very, very nice in the day but nearly disappears from the glass at night when lit from the front with interior lights. I figure most...
  3. Any problems with Avery Etchmark?

After requesting samples from just about everyone out there, it turns out Avery Etchmark is the closest fit to the look I'm after. However, I've read so many horror stories about problems with Avery vinyl, I'm a little gunshy about buying anything from them. Has anyone used Avery Etchmark? Has...
  4. Has Anyone Used MacTac Glass Decor 700?

I requested and received a sample of MacTac Glass Decor 700. It has about the visual characteristics I'm looking for. However, it was a nightmare to install and the final results aren't what I want. Confusing the issue is the fact that the sample was crinkled/creased in the mail on its way to...
  5. How do you create a curve of a known shape and size in Illustrator?

Yeah, that's much better. Set up guides, create circle, move circle to touch bottom guide, move anchor point of the circle to the bottom, type in 4000  Thanks for the help!
  6. How do you create a curve of a known shape and size in Illustrator?

That's really damned close to the number I got using the "scale a circle" method I just posted. It's an awkward method to use though.
  7. How do you create a curve of a known shape and size in Illustrator?

OK, I couldn't figure out how to change the anchor (which I'd like to be able to do) but I found a similar method: 1) Use a Guide to establish the left-right center of the work area 2) Use a Guide to establish the "top" of the arc (basically, the left and right corner). 3) Use a Guide spaced...
  8. How do you create a curve of a known shape and size in Illustrator?

Had to think about this one for a minute. Turns out this is WAY more complicated than I thought and there's probably no universally right way to do this. However, due to the math behind it, no, I don't think so. Had to hit some 8th grade geometry for this one. Assuming the surface I'm applying...
  9. How do you create a curve of a known shape and size in Illustrator?

How do you create a curve who's dimensions you know in Illustrator? Specifically, I have a curve that needs to be 1242mm wide with 96mm of drop in the center. How do I create a path that does that while remaining smooth and continuously curved? Just freehanding it with the pen tool risks...
  10. Blueprint Business Card. Critique

Thanks guys, those are for my company, which is a really, really odd combination of sign making, custom fabrication, and race-preparation of Subarus.
  11. Blueprint Business Card. Critique

I think stylistically, the guys are trying to suggest something like this. The first one is a landing page for the company website while a web developer actually creates the site itself and the second one is the avatar used on forums where the company is a paid vendor.
  12. Did anyone ever get the "square"

I've been accepting cc with it only since they first rolled it out. We've got two accounts with them now (different businesses) and have yet to have a problem with either. The flat 2.75% is WAY better than I could get out of any other conduit by the time you figure the monthly fee, gateway fees...
  13. Big squeegee

I started using mine tonight (UPS dropped it off about 6pm). Haven't applied anything to a substrate yet (that'll come tomorrow morning), but it's awesome how much easier it was to get the app tape onto the whole shebang, full width, by myself, with no wrinkles.
  14. titanium coated knife blades? do you use them?

Sounds like he's talking about Titanium Nitride (TiN) coated blades. They're a glossy yellow-gold color. I've not used them in utility knife blades but everything else I've ever tried that uses TiN coated cutting surfaces has been MUCH better than the uncoated versions. A TiN coated utility...
  15. What Frosted-look Vinyl Have I Been Seeing?

Many of the businesses around town have a frosted vinyl applied to glass. Some places are using it as a decorative element, some places are using it on glass partitions between meeting/waiting rooms to break up the space. I've received samples of the Oracal 8810 and 8510 frosted/etched vinyls...
  16. Recommendations on a pen tablet

We bought one of the Monoprice tablets after seeing this thread. She loaded the Wacom drivers for OS X and she's extremely happy with it. It has pressure but not angle sensitivity. Works pretty well but I still find having to put a battery in the stylus to be weird.
  17. What the hell is wrong with us?

Heh, as I said, I'm just moving into the sign business. I'm here to learn about the sign-specific stuff I now need to know. I've been in business for while, just not doing this. I absolutely agree with this and I think I made that clear in my original post. You have to accept, though, that...
  18. What the hell is wrong with us?

Let me preface this by saying I'm coming from a non-sign small-business background (I've just moved into the sign business). While I agree with a lot of what you posted there (I think most of your critique of the OP is spot on), you're missing the point on this statement. There are an ever...
