IMO hackers always find ways around everything thats why they keep coming up with updates BACK YOUR STUFF UP! I will stand by my my relision of not updating the computers. It worked great in xp and so far in 7 i havnt had a problem. I run avast full version and ccleaner and malewarebytes. i do know this is not a remedy if I am attacked but it saves the hell of microsoft updates jacking it up

Lets take an evaluation. Auto updates caused loss of time and production for how many thousands of people how many times in the past months?

Lets count them..
This latest Auto updates turned ON caused how many people to have a problem? A few hundred thousand???

Auto updates turned off caused NONE? The answer is pretty obvious.

TURN off the AUTO updates.

One can always do a manual update when he or she so desires. And then when a problem arises one can at least know when it happened. Auto up date on has people wake to a malfunction causing hours of lost production.

This update problem arises and causes too many problems. The update fixes an obscure special instance that 99.99% of us will never encounter.

yep AUTO update is silly. how many times have I come in in the morning to find that my computer turned itself off overnight cause of an update? One. never again. I set it to tell me updates are available, and I chose/pick which ones I may want installed (such as the monthly malicious software thingy)

This isn't a matter of being right or wrong, but I will just make my case and let folks do as they please.

I can think of several BIG infections in the last couple years that have sucked not only production time, but confidential information from hundreds of thousands of computer systems. The vast number of the infections/breaches could have been prevented by simply applying the security patches available in a timely manner.

I am all for testing patches and security updates before applying them. This is a huge part of good network administration. Unfortunately, most folks don't have the resources to do said testing and others forgo applying any updates altogether because they forget. In a situation of all or none, personally, I choose all. I can always uninstall an update I don't like.

For those that are diligent enough to manually install updates on a safe schedule, good on ya! But in my experience, not everyone is that diligent. To be honest, a good majority of computer users aren't even sure about what updates to install and feel they may be being tricked when their system tells them that there are updates that are important. What ends up happening? None of the security patches ever get installed.

This is not a black and white situation for everyone. This is an instance where an update caused a problem, I agree. But I can also count numerous times that not applying an update caused an issue, a serious issue. Is everyone going to need every update? Nope. But I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I will take my lumps every few years in the name of security.

Personally, I am a very low-risk user. I may never need a single patch or security update. I can't even remember the last time my security software notified me of any problems whatsoever. I could probably get away with no updates at all and no security software and have very few issues. But, not everyone has the same computer and Internet practices. I swear, there are some folks who seem to catch every infection known to man. They are ACTIVE members of every social networking website, spread every malicious email, visit every porn and gambling website, as well as downloading every "free" file on the Internet. You know what, they may work for you. Evaluate your risk tolerance carefully.

This is only my opinion, and your mileage may vary.

Win XP is very similar, but you uninstall the update in Add and Remove Programs. You can Hide the update in Windows Update (Internet Explorer). The exact steps are a tad bit different, but the process is the same.

I did this and when my computer restarted there was an error message that said it could not find desktop config settings and that it appeared they were stored in a different location. When I clicked OK my desktop is a black screen with only the recycle bin showing up and it looked like the color scheme and layout was something out of the days of win 98.

Did a restore to just prior to that uninstall and all is fine except that the bad update is still installed and no postscript fonts.

Any thoughts? Win 7 64 bit Pro

I agree. I can't image how the desktop config could be getting corrupted or deleted by removing the update.

I haven't had to resort to this, but you may try restoring from a point before the bad update and then marking the bad update to "hide". Theoretically, it should work.

I had the same thing happen to me with Flexi, the font names are there but they don't display when typing, I didn't experiment to see if they print. But I have two machines an XP and a Win 7. What is odd is that on the XP machine I am having the same problem with Adobe fonts but I have not done any Windows updates in 2 years on that machine. The only thing I did on the XP machine was update the free version of AVG anti virus from 2012 to 2013. Seems kind of strange that the same thing would happen when updating two completely different items. In Adobe Illustrator the Adobe fonts don't even show in the fonts list anymore.

Still doesn't explain why this happened on my XP machine when I didn't do any Windows Updates. There is more to this than just the Windows Updates.

Perhaps your computer does it automatically.

Today we've got the message that the problem is solved, the Security update is redevelopped by Microsoft, and the problem will not appear again. Microsoft urgently suggests to install that update because it helps with security issues regarding to embedded fonts in PDF-Files.

I got hit with this the other day and before realizing what it was i reinstalled flexi. After a few other attempts to get my fonts working I called flexi tech support, while on hold i went to the user forum and found out that this was a windows update issue and the fix was easy. This had been known by SAI for over a week by the time it happened to me.

My question is why didn't SAI email their users and notify them of the inpending loss of time they where about to incur?? They have our email addresses? how hard would that have been? coulda saved me a few hours...

come on SAI, lets try a little harder...

Nope! Not Working!

Running XP 32 bit and fonts are still missing. Removed the update, and even removed every update that was done in December.

Do I need to reinstall my Flexi as well?

I'm about 2 Minutes away from reinstalling Windows XP completely.

Microsoft has fixed the OpenType font issue related
to their update released on December 11th.
